The Department of International Student Program (ISP) at Macalester College seeks to hire a full-time ISP Associate Director of Advising and International Student Support. This position reports to the ISP Director and ensures that international students studying at Macalester in non-immigrant visa statuses are provided the individualized social, cultural, academic, personal, and immigration/regulatory advising support necessary to be successful, engaged members of the Macalester community. Works collaboratively in ISP's execution of initial I-20s, visa eligibility, and CPT/OPT work authorizations. Plans and implements programs that ensure international student success. Works in collaboration with other units and departments to create a culturally inclusive campus.

ISP serves the educational, regulatory, and personal development needs of Macalester’s international students through helping them integrate, participate, and apply their learning to their own lives and cultural contexts.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regulatory advising and compliance:
Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO)
Advises international students on immigration regulations, policies, and procedures
Evaluates visa eligibility, produce I-20 immigration documents, and communicate pre-arrival and arrival procedures to incoming international students
Interacts with all relevant governmental agencies as needed, including, but not limited to, SEVP, USCIS, ICE, CBP, SSA, IRS, MNDOR, etc.
Issues CPT work authorization and assists students in petitioning for OPT work authorization
Updates SEVIS database with current student information
Plans and executes various immigration workshops, including CPT, OPT, and International Students and Study Away
Remains current on developments in international education, including immigration legislation, interpretation, and practice
Administration, supervision, and interdepartmental collaboration:
Selects mentors (peer leaders) through application and mentor simulation process
Co-trains 24 mentors with ISP professional staff colleagues
Meets with eight mentors weekly to discuss academic, social and cultural adjustment of their mentees
Collaborates across departments to ensure there is equitable support for international students and to promote an understanding of the international student experience
Reviews institutional and departmental policies and procedures to ensure compatibility with immigration regulations
Represents International Student Programs department on campus-wide committees, including Case Management
Works with colleagues in other departments to support students in crisis
Serves as liaison and advocate with faculty/staff regarding student needs
Collaborates on projects with staff supporting study away students
Supports the Director in the implementation of strategic planning, including updating and improving immigration-related policies and procedures
Other international student support:
Works with the Director to envision, plan, implement, and/or supervise programs and services that enhance international student success, satisfaction, and retention
Meets individually with approximately 1/3 of first-year international students/Ametrica participants/exchange students during Fall semester to provide personal, academic, and immigration-related support
Co-plans and executes Pre-Orientation for International Students
Conducts midterm meetings with international students who have one or more D or below, or two or more grades of C- or below
Meets with students of concern as identified by campus partners or ISP staff
Provides individual support for students in crisis
Serves as the point person for exchange student support
Works collaboratively with partners such as Career Exploration, MAX Center (academic support), Study Away, and Academic Affairs
QUALIFICATIONS:
5-8 years working with diverse cultures and U.S. immigration/government regulations as a Designated School Official (DSO) plus counseling experience
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s Degree preferred in counseling, international education, higher education, cultural studies, ESL or similar
U.S. citizenship or permanent resident as mandated by federal regulations in order to be a DSO
Manages the process of Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), Pre-Orientation for International Students (PO4IS), taxes, training, host family, and mentoring
Understanding of Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor Information System), Non-Resident Alien tax software, and database management
Patience and general understanding of intercultural communication
Skills in event coordination and planning
Ability to interpret, enforce, and provide reasonable exceptions to governmental and institutional policies and general procedures
Understanding of student development and the unique needs of today’s college students
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across teams, and independently in a team-based setting

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Macalester employees enjoy a fantastic benefits package and working environment that is second to none. This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $55,000 - $60,000 and is accompanied by Macalester’s Benefits Package as a part of its total compensation package.
