Position Summary

Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), one of the nation's premier private institutions of higher education, seeks a visionary and collaborative leader for the position of Director of Academic Partnerships. This leadership position represents an exciting opportunity to be part of a well resourced career services transformation effort, a major campus priority at WashU, and work with a large, talented career advising staff to serve a high achieving student body.

Reporting to and with the support of the Associate Vice Chancellor of Career Development and Education, the Director of Academic Partnerships will have the following goals: (1) develop a new model that supports the integration of academic schools' priorities for career development into the career center and career education through career courses and online resources; (2) build the infrastructure to support the academic partnerships model, including creating the organizational chart and writing position descriptions; (3) transition existing staff into new roles with appropriate support and hiring new staff; (4) supervise the Academic Partnerships team, a group of approximately 12 professionals, setting annual goals, evaluating performance, and supporting career development; and (5) develop a unit-level strategic plan in support of the career center's goals and regularly assess and report on progress. The Director will also serve on the leadership team that will support the transition to a unified career center.

The new career center will reside in the Division of Student Affairs, a collaborative team of over 300 professionals who work together to coach, mentor, advise, and assist all students to achieve their full potential. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Anna Gonzalez, is known for her prior work transforming career centers, including the top-ranked career center at Harvey Mudd College. The Division's five major priorities include: career development; healthy excellence; sense of belonging; leadership; and justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The Director of Academic Partnerships is responsible for determining the strategic direction of career education with the ultimate goal of working to integrate career development into the academic enterprise. The individual in this role is responsible for building robust partnerships across WashU's colleges and overseeing the creation and maintenance of a robust set of online, self-service resources for faculty and students; the development of instructional toolkits, and the development and instructional support of career development courses.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Direct the overall approach, priorities, and objectives for career education, including building academic partnerships with WashU's undergraduate and graduate schools, lending support to the individual colleges' priorities, and integrating career development into the academic enterprise.
  • Supervise and manage five Academic Partnership leaders, including establishing and tracking quantitative goals for the team and individual team members. Indirectly supervise up to 8 staff assigned with course design, instruction, and faculty support. Develop and maintain training plans for team, in collaboration with Manager of HR Operations for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Develop unit-level strategic plan in support of career center's goals; assess and report progress. Create assessment plan to track outcomes and activities to ensure that student and academic partners' goals are met and recorded. Consistently evaluate and refine the program through data and information analysis, goal evaluation, surveys, and verbal feedback.
  • Serve on the Career Center Leadership Team.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD.
  • Two years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Ten years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience working with faculty in higher education on mentorship and/or professional development.
  • Teaching experience in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community.
  • Experience with and commitment to working with individuals of diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, religious backgrounds; people of various gender identities and/or sexual orientations; and people with a variety of levels of professional experience.
  • Ability to establish and communicate priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, writing, oral communication, and public speaking skills.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in related field and five years related experience.

Salary Range

$70,300.00 - $120,000.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
