Summary

Reporting to the Vice Provost / Dean of Admissions, the Vice Dean / Director of Admissions is a member of the senior management team of the University of Pennsylvania Undergraduate Admissions Office and will lead an Enrollment Team with an inclusive and growth-oriented commitment to Penn's four undergraduate schools: College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Nursing, and the Wharton School.

Committed to strategic boldness and collective care, the Vice Dean / Director of Admissions envisions and coordinates enrollment strategies through data-informed decision making while enacting managerial effectiveness and work allocation for the Enrollment Team of approximately 30 staff while collaborating with the Vice Deans who oversee Marketing/Communication/Visit Experience, Operations, and Community Engagement and Inclusion. In total, Penn Admissions comprises approximately 60 staff, internally supporting all functions required by undergraduate admissions.

Committed to directed focus and intentional equity, the Vice Dean / Director of Admissions prioritizes the enrollment of a diverse, innovative, and talented class by overseeing the implementation of domestic and international enrollment strategies, developing external partnerships with schools and community-based organizations across Philadelphia, the United States, and internationally, and strengthening the evaluation and selection strategies that ultimately build our undergraduate enrollment.

With historical nods to the spirit of our founder, Benjamin Franklin, Penn Admissions engages in strategic boldness by locating and inspiring the next generation of students to contribute to the public good through an ethos of discovery, creativity, and innovation. In addition, the successful candidate for this role should be able to navigate complex governance structures and decentralized environments while cultivating influential relationships across the University and the national higher education landscape. This leader should display a history of dedicated advocacy for prospective students and should be able to convey and further define Penn's unique value proposition, while demonstrating an interest in supporting all students and families who seek a top-tier university education.

Contributing to the field of higher education, the Vice Dean / Director of Admissions will enhance Penn Admissions as a hallmark of thought leadership and as an extraordinary place to work, ensuring that all aspects of our work are viewed through diversity, equity, and inclusion. In partnership with senior leadership and key stakeholders across the university, this role will also ensure that research and best practices within and beyond higher education are applied to our work, towards a commitment of intellectual curiosity and continuous improvement.

Job Description

Qualifications:
  • Masters degree plus 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in admissions and college counseling or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A deep commitment to issues of access and inclusion within higher education, and an understanding that these are essential lenses through which every strategic initiative and work product created by our office must be viewed
  • History of developing evidence-based solutions and making decisions that are informed by data
  • Outstanding track record for partnering with and drawing out the best in other professionals as a leader and manager, and of helping colleagues across all functions improve their own managerial approaches.
  • Ability to lead, plan, develop, and implement projects / programs that deliver on priorities for both the office and for the broader institution, and the interpersonal intelligence to maintain relationships while also redirecting efforts if a project is not viable or aligned with these priorities
  • Ability to structure complex issues and organize complicated insights from multiple sources and translate these effectively into strategic plans for action across the enrollment function
  • A growth mindset and the ability to inspire this mindset in others
  • Experience with planning and managing budgets
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as required

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
