Summary:

The Director of Student Services has overall responsibility for the planning, development and budgeting of programs for students ages 3-22. These include all disability categories recognized under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504. Programs include special classes, resource rooms, North Haven Transition Program, special education transportation, supportive tutoring and homebound instruction. The Director ensures that all programs are in compliance with state and federal mandates and regulations.

Job Requirements

  • Education/Training Requirements:

    A minimum of five (5) successful years of teaching and leadership experience with a proven record of accomplishment of improving student achievement.

    Administration (092) and Special Education (165) or Pupil Personnel Certification.

    Demonstrated knowledge of the planning and placement process (PPT) IDEA and special education programs.

    Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance and analysis of district-wide referral data.

    Demonstrated managerial skills, effective decision-making, interpersonal relationship skills and problem-solving skills.

    Ability to engage the entire school community in order to effect instructional success.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)

    Evaluates performance of programs and staff.

    Coordinates the development and implementation of goals and related activities.

    Implements policy and procedure changes from the Board, State and Federal level.

    Acts as a catalyst for innovative thinking, including evaluation of existing programs and development of new programs.

    Works collaboratively with all district administrators.

    Provides leadership for programming and curriculum for all special education services.

    Prepares the annual budget for the department and assists in the preparation of State reimbursement forms.

    Informs the business office of all financial obligations incurred by residential placement, tutoring, home and hospital instruction, tuition students and transportation.

    Develops proposals and monitors special education state and federal grants.

    Serves as central office coordinator for building level planning and placement teams.

    Responsible for all special education transportation.

    Acts as liaison to the State Department of Education for special service programs.

    Provides district-wide crisis intervention.

    Maintains professional competency by attending meetings of professional organizations and conferences, serving on school and district committees and keeping abreast of current educational literature.

    Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

    Ongoing awareness of federal and state guidelines impacting the delivery of special education services.

    Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.

    Awareness of best practices guiding delivery of instructional intervention.

    Capacity to manage challenging interactions with multiple stakeholders while maintaining a professional demeanor.

    Ability to prepare grants and reports on outcomes connected to grant proposals.

    Ongoing commitment to maintain the most up-to-date knowledge on procedures and practices impacting special education.
