College Mentors are members of an outreach team promoting the value of a college education to youth (up to 8th grade) and their families - sharing "what you can study, what you can become, and how you can impact the world". Building a new pathway to college here at Pacific University that is focused on welcoming youth and families, mentors will design campus tours and plan activities engaging - student clubs, Student Affairs departments, and academic departments and faculty. The purpose of the tours and activities is to spark a sense of college "belonging" among youth, and what ways families can help support their child's college and career goals. Mentors will interact with youth and families, and help them learn what "college-going" means to first-generation, immigrant, refugee and other diverse communities with a skillset to create intentional experiences that intersects college practice, belief, attitude, and climate. Mentors will receive EDIA (equity, diversity, inclusion, and access)-centered training on how to conduct a campus tour, gain teamwork and leadership skills, and best practices to engage families. Mentors will also work directly with community partners that include school districts and non-profit organizations. Mentors are expected to develop their own interests in working with diverse communities, engage EDIA practices towards a global citizenship, stay current on local and national issues, and explain unique college pathways to help families understand how to thrive academically, socially, and economically. We are especially interested in building a team of students with diverse cultural and lived-experience backgrounds.
