Position Summary

The Lead Advisor -Math and Science Learning Center reports directly to the Dean of the College of Sciences with supervision from the College of Science Director of Advising. The Lead Advisor provides a vital service to a community of students who are needing support in coursework. The Lead Advisor will work as a member of the College of Sciences Success Center (CoS SSC) team and is responsible for working with the Director of Advising on all aspects of elevated, complex matters requiring coordinating the academic needs for tutoring support, supporting existing courses and programs, assessing future needs and help defining college goals in reaching graduation initiative 2025. The Lead Advisor maintains effective, harmonious working relationships with MSLC staff and tutors, faculty, departments, College of Science Success Center stakeholders, and other college stakeholders to ensure operating goals are met consistently.

The position is responsible for assuring the continued functioning and success of the Math and Science Learning Center in the absence of the Director of Advising, provides ongoing support for Math and Science Learning Center content liaisons, tutors, staff and assures University Policies are met in all areas of the student experience.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Math and Science Learning Center (MSLC), located in Love Library 328, provides a physical hub and centralized location for free, on-demand tutoring for students enrolled in lower division mathematics, and statistics. In addition, the MSLC has expanded to offer tutoring support in selected courses for Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, upper division Math and more. The MSLC facilitates partnerships with faculty to utilize their teaching assistants (TAs) for course support. The MSLC is open to any student at SDSU needing support in math and science courses and typically supports ~1500 unique students per semester who return for continued support with a total of ~7000 visits per semester.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field; including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related. Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A Masters degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.
