Job Details
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is a leader in the University of Minnesota’s goal to be a top global learning environment. International student and scholar advisors serve as experts in addressing the immigration and intercultural needs of the University’s international population. They provide culturally competent immigration advising to international students, faculty, staff, scholars, and their dependents.
This position is a member of the ISSS Scholar Advising team, with a small amount of time (approximately 20%) also dedicated to student advising. This position provides expert advice and support primarily to international faculty, staff, scholars, and their sponsoring departments across the 5-campus University system on matters related to employment and immigration regulations. This position may also provide immigration advising and support to international students at the U of MN Twin Cities campus. Responsibilities include:
- Immigration Advising and Counseling (65%)
- Data Management and Document Production (20%)
- Communications, Outreach, and Programming (10%)
- Professional Development and Service (5%)
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in international education, law, human resources, counseling or a related field plus 4 years of relevant professional experience, or Master’s degree in international education, law, human resources, counseling or a related field plus 2 years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage high workload with sensitive deadlines.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Strong technical ability and skills.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse team of people.
- Work, study, travel abroad, or relevant domestic multicultural experience.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to serve as DSO and ARO, per federal government requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least two years of experience serving as an international advisor/counselor to students, scholars, and/or employees in a higher education setting.
- Working knowledge of non-immigrant student, scholar, and employment-based visas (F-1, J-1, H-1B, E-3, etc.)
- Experience with Sunapsis and/or PeopleSoft.
- Experience with UMN HR policies and practices
- Ability to effectively present information at workshops or training seminars.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate programs.
- One or more language competencies in addition to English.
