Job Description:

The Director of Education Abroad provides strategic and operational leadership for Goucher's nationally recognized study abroad program, through which every Goucher undergraduate student completes a study abroad experience as part of their degree program. The Director oversees program development and execution and student advising and manages relationships with a broad range of internal and external partners to ensure that Goucher's study abroad portfolio aligns with evolving trends in global learning and established best practices for health, safety, and risk management. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Global, Career, and Community-Based Learning and supervising a three-person team, the Director serves as one of the primary spokespeople and advocates for Goucher's commitment to global education throughout the college and in the broader international education community.

Essential Job Functions:

20% FACULTY-LED PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT - Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop short-term faculty-led study abroad programs for Goucher undergraduate students and non-credit participants, including alumnae/i and community members. Continually refine program development guidelines and resources to ensure all programs achieve substantive intercultural learning goals and conform to best practices for risk management. Support program directors with budget development and identification of appropriate study abroad provider organizations.

15% PARTNERSHIP MANAGEMENT - Serve as the primary point of contact between the Office of Global Education (OGE) and a variety of external partners, including the ISEP consortium, bilateral exchange partners, and program providers. Manage these relationships to ensure that the college's overall portfolio of semester-long and short-term study abroad programs offers students geographical variety and high programmatic quality within existing budgetary parameters and goals.

25% PROGRAM DELIVERY AND ADMINISTRATION - Lead the work of the Office of Global Education to ensure that all study abroad programs operate efficiently and safely throughout the program life cycle. Advise short-term program directors on proactive risk management strategies and serve as the first line of on-call response for in-country emergency situations. Proactively monitor country conditions and relevant government agency advisories for all program sites. Periodically evaluate the college's insurance policies and propose adjustments as needed. Maintain fluid, ongoing collaboration with offices throughout the Goucher campus to ensure the highest levels of wrap-around student support in relation to registration, credit transfer, financial aid, billing, disability accommodations, and support for mental and physical health conditions. Monitor the office's compliance with established college policies and procedures governing study abroad and propose policy updates or revisions as needed.

20% OUTREACH AND ADVISING - Lead the Office of Global Education's study abroad advising efforts to ensure that students receive individualized, identify-affirming guidance on program selection. Oversee efforts to develop, deliver, and refine general orientation sessions (e.g., Study Abroad 101) as well as program-specific pre-departure workshops. Ensure the accuracy and comprehensiveness of information posted to the college's study abroad portal (Terra Dotta) and the efficiency and accuracy of registration and record-keeping processes. Oversee the design and execution of campus programming to raise awareness of study abroad, including the semi-annual Study Abroad Fair. Represent the Office of Global Education before a range of internal constituencies, including prospective and current students, family members, and donors. Work directly with advisees facing complex or sensitive circumstances related to study abroad.

10% CAMPUS AND CURRICULUM INTERNATIONALIZATION SUPPORT - In collaboration with the Associate Vice President for Global, Career, and Community-Based Learning, develop strategies for ongoing engagement of students and faculty in curricular and co-curricular internationalization efforts. Collaborate with the OGE team's Director of International Student and Scholar Services to identify synergies between inbound and outbound student mobility programs. Lead the office's efforts to develop and deploy campus-wide International Education Week programming. Develop and deliver content, as needed, for IDS 201, the college's reflection course for semester-long study abroad students. Represent Goucher in appropriate national and international forums to bolster the college's status as a though leader in global education.

5% ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION - In collaboration with relevant faculty bodies and the Associate Vice President for Global, Career, and Community-Based Learning, develop meaningful, direct assessments of student learning and other approaches to data gathering on the impact of study abroad programs. Facilitate efforts to translate assessment results into program modifications and enhancements.
