Global Safety Coordinator
Position Summary
The Global Safety Coordinator will serve as a member of the Office for Global Health, Safety, and Security and oversee operational management of international health and safety matters. They assist with the implementation of travel preparedness and response strategies and processes to promote and protect the well-being of Michigan State University (MSU) travelers. They work primarily with student travelers and the Office for Education Abroad student issues and serve as back-up to the Director and faculty and staff focused Coordinator for Global Health, Safety, and Security as it relates to all other MSU travelers.
The position is designed as hybrid within MSU's International Studies and Programs with the expectation that the Coordinator will work three days a week on campus. The hybrid schedule permits the Coordinator to work remotely two days a week.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Train emergency responders and share 24/7 coverage for international emergencies and be available to participate in 24/7 emergency coverage (by cell phone) with other qualified personnel
- Assist Global Safety Director and other Coordinator on managing international incidents by monitoring traveler locations, worldwide events and trends that may affect MSU affiliates abroad
- Maintain practical and effective international health and safety standards, expectations, policies, and guidelines for MSU student programs, activities, and independent travelers
- Assist with the recommendation of steps to mitigate risk in planning and managing high risk travel with particular emphasis on education abroad and other student travel
- Serve as primary insurance contact for student international travel as well as student conduct issues relating to education abroad programs
- Develop to plans, student and program leader guides, web pages, etc. to provide clear safety and emergency guidance
- Train program organizers and leaders, including training for high-threat situations as appropriate and oversee pre-departure on-line student orientation
- In collaboration with the Director, the Office of Institutional Equity, MSU's Clery Coordinator, the Office for Education Abroad, and the Office of the General Counsel, and other relevant stakeholders, contribute to compliance efforts relating to federal laws and MSU policies such as Title IX and the Jeanne Clery Act
- Partner with MSU units and administrators on international health and safety student issues specifically with University Physician, MSU Travel Clinic, Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD), Student Support and Accountability, the Office for Education Abroad, the Office of Institutional Equity, General Counsel's Office, Japan Center for Michigan Universities, and other campus stakeholders.
- Occasional domestic and international travel is required for conferences and training, site assessment, etc.
- Development of effective partnerships with education abroad program providers, security information providers, government agencies, and professional networks in the areas of international health and safety
- Manage pre-departure on-line student orientations
- Review education abroad program proposals and other student international travel plans including conducting site visits, writing security risk assessments for international programs, and recommending risk mitigation strategies
- Administrative and analytical support to the Risk and Security Assessment Committee including meeting scheduling, minute taking, and preparing country-specific assessments
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a bachelor's degree in international relations, foreign language, area studies, communication, higher education administration, criminal justice, or related field. Three to five years of experience in a related field such as study abroad, emergency coordination, international travel and security, campus crisis management and /or risk management. Ability to remain calm under pressure and in crisis situations. International experience such as Peace Corps, nongovernmental or academic; experience in managing international emergencies; experience living or working abroad; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Master's Degree in international relations, policy or other field related to international engagement or global health, safety and security; working proficiency in a foreign language; proficiency with computer software, data management, and social media; knowledge and interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty and staff, students, parents, police and government agencies; strong public speaking and presentation skills.
