The Graduate School at Princeton University seeks an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. Working under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the AD will have responsibility for the development of programs and initiatives that serve the diverse needs of graduate students through fostering a strong sense of community amongst graduate students and increasing cooperation in resolving campus and community concerns. Areas of responsibility include events and programs such as organizing the hooding & recognition ceremony, advising graduate student organizations, advising graduate students dealing with interpersonal challenges, crisis management, emergency response and discipline. The AD works closely with key campus partners to ensure graduate student needs are met throughout the university and works to balance student advocacy with institutional priorities. The AD provides leadership and coordination for student affairs initiatives that aim to offer balance in students' lives and to enhance the graduate student experience at Princeton University.

A. Crisis Management/ Student Support:
The AD serves in an on-call rotation to provide crisis management for medical, psychological and other emergencies; serves as the liaison to other campus offices for community support needs of graduate students, including CPS, UHS and DPS. Serving two divisions (Humanities and Social Sciences), the AD provides counseling to students and advice to Director of Graduate Studies and Graduate Program Administrators on a wide range of issues; advises and counsels students-in-difficulty; facilitates Leaves of Absence in cooperation with deans of Academic Affairs. The AD works pro-actively to assist students experiencing personal difficulties and makes appropriate referrals and/or mandates administrative evaluations. The AD serves on campus-wide planning groups for response to emergencies and represents the Graduate School during emergency situations.

B. Hooding and Recognition Ceremony/ Programming/ Events:
The AD is responsible for organizing the annual Hooding and Recognition Ceremony, the Tribute to Teaching and the Honorific receptions. Attention to details and strong organizational and planning skills is required.

C. Advising Graduate Student Organizations/Approving and Advising Student Run Events:
The AD has supervisory responsibility for 80+ registered graduate student organizations. Develops, articulates and implements Graduate School and University policy and procedures regarding their operation. Responsible for approval of expenditures, budget management and handling of financial transactions for graduate student organizations. Advises the Graduate Student Government and serves on the GSG Events Board. Manages budget transfers and allocations for student organizations. Responsible for approving all graduate student-run events and ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures. Responsible for making judgment calls on provisions for safety and security for all graduate student events.

D. Discipline/Community Standards/ Other:
The AD adjudicates discipline for non-academic infractions of university policies. The AD advises and supports graduate students in matters related to Title IX and attends Title IX trainings. The AD is often called upon to represent the Graduate School on a variety of issues surrounding community standards.

Master's degree and at least six years of related experience in student affairs, counseling, or related fields.

Position requires a flexible, adaptable, caring and highly motivated individual with strong collaborative skills for teamwork and consensus building. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement and discretion in a fast-paced environment and in, at times, stressful situations. Excellent organizational skills, ability to set priorities and multi-task. Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences, understanding of a residential academic community environment, and experience and confidence advising students on complex and confidential matters.

Occasional evenings and weekends are required. 1-3 years experience with on-call crisis management and adjudicating student discipline. 1-3 years supporting students in Title IX matters.

Basic knowledge of graduate education, doctoral education in particular. Direct student affairs experience with graduate students, highly desirable. Graduate degree in student affairs, counseling or related field, highly desirable.
