Position Summary:
The Assistant Dean for Institutional Diversity & International Students and Scholars delivers a comprehensive combination of services to international students and scholars, develops and oversees programs, services, and initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion, social justice, educational equity, cultural understanding, and competency, and cultivates and communicates a common vision as an essential element of the mission of Harvey Mudd College. Serves as the Principal Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer for immigration regulations affecting international students and scholars. The Assistant Dean is responsible for performing a wide range of duties to meet the needs of an international student population including advising students on maintaining lawful F-1 and J-1 status, resolving immigration-related issues, and supporting students. The Assistant Dean must have excellent communication, planning, budgeting, and management skills. The Assistant Dean is expected to participate in the on-call duty schedule on a rotating basis and respond to crises when appropriate. The Assistant Dean for Institutional Diversity serves as a leadership figure and role model who provides direction and support to student leaders, which includes occasional evening and weekend commitments.

Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree; or a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Experience: Three to four years of increasingly responsible related experience, preferably at an academic institution.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The anticipated starting salary range is $65,000 - $75,000/year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Institutional Diversity
- Advance the College's mission and goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion by implementing existing programs and initiatives, as well as developing and implementing new ones, as needed.
- Assist with the management, training, and supervision of employees and student staff.
- Manage, track, and evaluate the OID budgets with integrity, provide regular reports to the Associate Dean for Institutional Diversity, and administer Student Affairs and College business practices and policies.
- Serve as a resource for social justice and inclusivity for the campus community, and in particular, with colleagues responsible for faculty, staff, student, and alumni development.
- Facilitate and attend programs in the residence halls, which at times occur in the evenings or on weekends intended to build a residential community focused on social justice, inclusion, and diversity.
- Advise and mentor underrepresented students and serve as their advocate and liaison.
- Advise and support a variety of minoritized student organizations designed to help students achieve their personal and professional goals.
- Work closely with The Claremont College's Office of Black Student Affairs, Chicano Latino Student Affairs, The Queer Resource Center, the Asian American Advisory Board and other Consortium-wide diversity resources on a variety of student development programs.
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of Claremont Colleges heritage month celebrations.
- Keep abreast of relevant trends and issues in higher education and participate in regional and national professional development opportunities.
- Occasionally facilitate meetings, prepare staff development exercises, and assist with educational presentations.
- Assist with planning, implementing, and evaluating student activity/ campus life programs, campus events, and celebrations as assigned.
- Provide on-site supervision of events to oversee facilities use, arrangements, admission, and compliance with policies and to assist in problem resolution.
- Develop initiatives and work collaboratively with other staff to assist students in their connection and involvement with activities, organizations, and small groups.
- Create publications targeted directly at student organizations to communicate department resources.
- Prepare and manage assessment and evaluation data to analyze qualitative and quantitative data to measure the progress of diversity initiatives and programs.
- Support the Office of Campus Life through program advisement, training, and student leadership development.
- Serve as a Title IX Investigator and part of the HMC Title IX Team.
- Leads International New Student Orientation and assists with New Student Orientation as a member of the DSA staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Administration of programs for international students and scholars, student leadership/volunteer services: performance evaluation; program mission, priorities, and performance assurance; budget management; evaluate practices and engineer improvement strategies; assess services and student learning outcomes; develop and implement policy; custodian of confidential College and student records; coordinate appropriate assessment of services and student learning outcomes; remain professionally current with knowledge and practice; establish and monitor contracts with off-campus institutions.
- Direct service to international students in the areas of: academic advising/issues, registration, classroom difficulties/intervention, cross-cultural/adjustment questions, on- and off-campus employment, medical issues, financial aid, scholarships, new student orientation, networking opportunities, etc.
- Daily office processes: database management, website development/management, correspondence with off-campus agencies, international programming, etc.
- Train and supervise other Designated School Officials (DSO).
- Annually verify that every DSO who has SEVIS access is still employed by the institution and require continued access to the system. This information must be verified each year between December 2 and March 2.
- Update Form I-17 for any material changes to school's information.
- File for Recertification in SEVIS when necessary to keep the school compliant with SEVP regulations.
- Provide accurate immigration information to international students; monitor and track student immigration status, and maintain files.
- Establish, update and track files on the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
- Advise students with immigration petitions and applications to include processing for new F-1 & J-1 visas, work permits, reinstatement, and reduced course load authorizations, change of status, medical leave and economic hardship employment authorization.
- Assist international students with processing applications for work permits, reinstatements, extension of stay and other immigration related matters.
- Assist students in obtaining F-1/J-1 immigration benefits such as CPT/OPT/STEM OPT extensions and Academic Training.
- Participate in training and maintain a relationship with professional organizations to keep abreast of changes in federal rules and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Assume, as a primary responsibility, the duties associated with advising on federal regulations that impact international students. Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
- Advises international students in F-1 and J-1 visa classification and scholars in all aspects of SEVIS regulations to ensure maintenance of their non-immigrant status and advises them on a wide range of immigration and SEVIS regulations.
- Interprets F-1 and J-1 visa regulations to ensure compliance, and provide counseling and advising support to international students and scholars on immigration related matters, and other support issues.
- Supports students and scholars in F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant status in the area of immigration regulations and SEVIS procedures related to training and employment. Offers guidance to academic departments and key contacts on regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and campus protocols.
- Maintaining immigration records/files in accordance with University policies and federal laws.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Under the direct supervision of the Associate Dean, will help develop, promote, and maintain community building programs for the Division of Student Affairs.
- Determining/influencing policy and programming decisions to make the College more "international student friendly" and more responsive to the needs of international students and scholars. Examples include service on Enrollment Management Committee; initiating policy decisions related to curricular practical training for international students; selection of roommates for international students; initiating Third Culture Kids (TCK) workshop for faculty, etc.
- Collaboration with faculty/staff on issues related to international students/internationalization, including grants, special programs (Davis), international alumni, presidential trips abroad, visiting international faculty (all departments), international articles in publications, websites, etc.
- Supervision of immigration issues for the campus. Authorized by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the College as the PDSO (Primary Designated School Official) and ARO (Alternate Responsible Officer) for student immigration issues. Interpret immigration policy and make final decisions on all questions regarding immigration for students and visiting scholars. Provide significant input for decisions regarding immigration issues for foreign, permanent faculty.
- In the Associate Dean's absence, ensure that requests for action and/or information are handled appropriately; as needed, interpret requests and coordinate appropriate action
- The Assistant Dean serves as a responsible employee for Title IX and Campus Security Authority (CSA) for the Clery Act
- Maintain appropriate contact and communication with Campus Safety, Facilities and Maintenance, Dining Services and Media Services to ensure cooperative efforts for activities and events on campus
- Manage and maintain program, department, and College information and records that are confidential and/or sensitive in accordance with policy and applicable laws
- Participate in the DSA on-call rotation; manage referrals and student issues related to distress/crisis interventions, following internal protocols and procedures.
