Position Summary

Washington University in St. Louis is seeking an energetic and dynamic individual for the position of Manager of Fitness & Well-Being. The candidate will provide significant leadership in fitness programming at the Sumers Recreation Center and student development across our student employment program.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Provides direct leadership to our personal training program.
  • Hires/Trains/Supervises a team of 10-15 part-time trainers.
  • Instructs an in-house personal training certification class.
  • Provides ongoing professional development to staff.

Supports the development and delivery of our comprehensive fitness and well-being programs.
  • Develops a menu of "BearFIT Skills" instructional workshops.
  • Assists in the recruiting/hiring/evaluating of fitness instructors.
  • Instruct multiple BearFIT classes each week
  • Supports collaborative programming outside of Sumers Rec Center.

Provides macro level support for our student employment program, including the recruitment, training, and celebration of our 200+ student employees.

Administers a massage therapy program at the Sumers Recreation Center including the recruiting and hiring of part-time massage therapists with variety of modality expertise.

Coordinates the repair and maintenance of fitness equipment with third party vendors.

Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Exercise Science, Recreation, Physical Education, Kinesiology or appropriate field.
  • Supervisory experience managing diverse fitness and wellness programming, facility management and staff, preferably in a campus recreation setting.
  • Experience utilizing Innosoft Fusion or similar member management system.
  • Ability to performance basic maintenance on fitness equipment.
  • Ability to effectively manage student workers.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills.
  • Excellent decision making and prioritizing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to assess and promote inclusive programs.
  • Strong conflict management skills.
  • Strong team work skills.
  • Demonstrated competency in helping to meet program objectives, assessment, and helping to establish program priorities.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate related field; or an Associate's Degree alongside advanced certifications in a fitness-related field.
  • Experience teaching and conducting fitness and wellness assessments, classes, workshops, clinics, and special events.
  • Current certifications as an aerobic/group fitness instructor from a nationally recognized governing body. Accepted Group Fitness Certifications include ACE, AFFA, ACSM. Current certification in multiple formats of group exercise instruction. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications; ability to become Red Cross instructor certified.

Salary Range

$44,700.00 - $73,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
