Job Details
The Associate Director, Publishing Services plays a key role in the conceptualization, development, and delivery of print and digital publications and products, as well as collateral and online content. Reporting to the Director, Publishing Services / Editor-in-Chief, International Educator (IE), the Associate Director manages the business operations of NAFSA’s publishing services and provides editorial direction, working closely with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders across the Publications team and the organization. This position is critical to the successful production of NAFSA’s thought leadership in international education.
Leads the development and launch of NAFSA publications. (40%)
· In alignment with the Director, oversees the editorial development and publication process for books, e-books, white papers, reports, digital downloads, student and parent guides, and other resources and thought leadership from conception to execution.
· Serves as editor and project manager on publications projects and plans and manages editorial schedules; oversees delegation of these responsibilities when needed.
· Works closely with program colleagues, member-leaders, and expert authors on content development for publications.
· Ensures that publications meet NAFSA’s standard of excellence.
· Leads or contributes to departmental meetings, acquisitions meetings, and other related meetings to generate ideas for new publications, revisions, related products, etc.
· With Publications team colleagues, creates and executes opportunities for crossover and complementary content with other projects.
· Leads marketing efforts for new releases and evergreen publications.
Manages the business practices and production of NAFSA’s publishing program (exclusive of periodicals and digital publishing). (35%)
· Plans and manages production schedules; delegates responsibilities when needed.
· Oversees the design and print production process for publications.
· Develops work agreements and contracts with writers, designers, printers, and other vendors.
· Manages quality control on subcontracted publication processes.
· Works with the Director to manage the year-to-year product pipeline and budget.
· Reports out sales data; uses sales and market data, as well as profit and loss statements to inform publishing strategy.
· Assists with business practices including invoices, reports, permissions, royalty payments, etc.
· Conducts internal and external book order fulfillment operations, including managing NAFSA’s relationships with external fulfillment agencies.
· Assists, as needed, with customer service-related issues to NAFSA publications, including troubleshooting problems that arise with NAFSA’s fulfillment vendor.
Oversees planning for and management of the annual conference bookstore, working closely with colleagues. (15%)
· Serves as the staff point person for the bookstore, including helping to train and delegate to staff volunteers onsite.
· Oversees the internal and external inventory.
· Coordinates staffing, set up, and breakdown of the bookstore on site, as well as book signings.
· Oversees the point of sale system and tracks sales.
Serves as part of the Publication team’s function as in-house editorial service, including for articles, NAFSA annual conference publications, and supplemental content. (5%)
· Supports colleagues in the Publications team in the review and edit of digital publications.
· Collaborates with conference program colleagues on content for the annual conference.
· Manages the quality editing of in-house products.
· Collaborates with Publications team members on the NAFSA style guide.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the strategic goals and objectives of the Association. (5%)
Total Compensation, Benefits
The target salary for this full-time, 35-hour per week Associate Director of Publishing Services position is $65,000. Total compensation for employment at NAFSA entails a competitive employee benefits package including:

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in journalism, English, communications, or a related field
- Minimum five years of writing, editing, and editorial project management responsibility in a book publishing, communications, or similar environment
- Superior communication skills, both oral and written, with strong editorial capabilities (writing, editing, proofreading)
- Proven project management skills and practice, including process documentation, ongoing status updates, and managing up, as needed
- Ability to think strategically through projects and communicate ideas effectively while working collaboratively with internal teams
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple streams of work, prioritize appropriately, and problem solve effectively in complex situations
- Publishing industry business acumen and knowledge of trends, print production processes, graphic design principles, and Web design/communication principles
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Hands-on knowledge of MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, or other content management systems.
- Ability to track multiple, competing projects
- A firm grasp of style rules, including the Chicago Manual of Style, in addition to experience using an in-house style guide
Further Experience, Preferred:
· Experience in book publishing in both editorial and business/marketing capacity
· Previous experience with NAFSA, international education, or other association membership organizations
· Experience working on projects with association or nonprofit volunteer leaders
· Experience with print/digital optimization
· Experience in or exposure to international education
Work Environment
The standard workday is generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. During the week after Memorial Day to Labor Day, it is 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday. NAFSA employees are eligible to apply for regular teleworking two days a week (on Mondays and Fridays).
Travel is required occasionally related to job responsibilities, especially for the annual conference or other leadership meetings. Participation in the NAFSA annual conference the week of Memorial Day, including the holiday itself, is a job requirement. The annual conference is held in varying cities.
Tasks are performed in a typical office environment, involving sitting for extended periods of time. Sitting, standing, bending, and lifting 10lbs or less will occur intermittently throughout the workday. Position involves constant use of computer keyboard and monitor, with intermittent use of headset and microphone.
