Virginia State University is seeking an Assistant Director for International Students and Scholars who is excited to support VSUs efforts to strengthen our campus internationalization efforts. The assistant director for International Students and Scholars is a key leader within the Dr. George H. Bennett Office for International Education.

Job Duties

The assistant director will serve as the Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer. Provide leadership in the analysis and implementation of F-1 visa regulations and F-1 status-related policies. Ensure proper and timely issuance of immigration documents after student admission and review of financial and other immigration documents. Provided advice and support to students and scholars on their visa status and related responsibilities. s
 

Advise international students and scholars on immigration, academic, financial, personal, cultural adjustment, and cross-cultural communication matters. Work with other staff members and other university offices to ensure a campus environment that facilitates international student and scholar success. Supports international students and scholars with their academic, cross-cultural and personal needs. Works closely with the College of Graduate Studies, academic departments, the University Counseling Center, the Department of Residence Life and Housing, and other units on campus to support the success of international students and scholars.

Develops cross-campus and local partnerships to foster international student and scholar adjustment and integration to the United States, May occasionally present workshops to campus partners and local city community groups.
 

Minimum Education and Experience:

• A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of relevant experience in international student or scholar advising or programming.
• Experience working with international students or in a related international or cross-cultural environment. 
• Knowledge of SEVIS procedures and processes.
• Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in the creation and production of immigration documents.
• Knowledge of federal rules and regulations related to immigration and current trends within the international education field.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from varied administrative, academic, cultural, religious, national, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Be eligible to become a DHS Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) -- U.S. permanent resident or citizen status required.  

Preferred Education and Experience

• Have an earned master's degree in a relevant discipline. Have five years of experience working with international students and/or scholars Knowledge of cross-cultural adjustment issues Mentoring or related skills and a desire to assist students in social, cultural, health and psychological areas affecting their personal development. Ability to speak a foreign language fluently Experience living, working, or studying abroad.
