The Director of Global Education oversees the operation of the College's Global Education office, which administers global education programs, provides support for international students, and supports W&J travel courses and international study scholarships. The Director also collaborates with other divisions at the College to advance global education at W&J. The Director of Global Education reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College.
Duties and Responsibilities
Global Education Office
- Create and manage Global Education operating budget, balancing operating costs, study abroad program fees, international student services, faculty/staff site visits, and W&J scholarships. Supervise student workers.
- Collaborate with other offices on campus, including Residence Life, Student Life, Academic Affairs, the Business Office, and the Registrar's Office, to ensure smooth transitions for inbound and outbound students. Develop and oversee office outreach, retention, programming, and collaborate across campus to drive forward initiatives. Represent the Office of Global Education at campus-outreach events.
- Make recommendations to senior staff regarding safety and liability in education abroad. Steer the development of policies that consider risk and legal compliance for international education.
- Serve as a leader in responses to emergencies involving students abroad on official academic programs and set practices in place for appropriate action.
- Serve as data manager and assessment lead for international programs; report to external and internal audiences on student numbers and projections (i.e. Open Doors).
- Present the needs of study abroad and international students on cross-departmental committees. Make recommendations to CGE (Committee on Global Education) and MTSC (May Term Support Committee) for international education and for faculty-led travel.
- Develop strategies to promote inclusive access to international education opportunities.
Student Exchange Programs
- Shape, manage and maintain portfolio of approved off-campus-study programs and partners, evaluate existing partnerships, monitor exchange balances with partner institutions, assess geographical or disciplinary gaps, make recommendations for and pursue new opportunities, and strategically collaborate with academic departments as appropriate.
- Oversee exchange student admission process; this includes academic advising, generating the visa-related messaging students need in their process, helping students integrate on-campus, and organizing on- and off-campus cultural events.
- Advise students on academically appropriate study abroad programs, review student applications for off-campus study, collect and maintain all pre-departure assignments, and implement both pre-departure and re-entry orientation programming.
International Students
- Oversee administration of international student services, including new student orientation, academic advising (for exchange students only), immigration advising, and programming.
- Work in partnership with the Enrollment division to recruit and retain international students.
- Act as W&J's Primary Designated School Official (PDSO), maintaining W&J's form I-17 and contact for DHS, SEVP, and USCIS. Proactively collaborate with SEVP and campus constituencies to ensure that College remains in good standing with USCIS, keep up-to-date on immigration regulations, oversee I-20 issuance for international students and immigration advising.
- Lead the development and dissemination of campus policy, academic and cultural support, retention efforts, and community engagement for F-1 and study abroad students.
- Support international student employment programs by providing guidance to students on applying for a Driver's License, on-campus employment, a Social Security Number, and Curricular and Optional Practical Training.
Travel Courses and Scholarships
- Support faculty-led programs, including pre-departure preparation for faculty, support in course development, budgets, orientation for faculty, reviewing locations for safety and liability concerns.
- Maintain existing policies, procedures, forms, documents, and promotional materials to ensure consistent and effective communications.
- Organize health insurance coverage plan for inbound and outbound students annually, as well as College-wide enrollment in these plans.
- Serve as W&J advisor external scholarships for W&J students (i.e. Gilman, VIH Program, etc.).

Qualifications
- Master's degree, minimum of five years' experience leading and directing international programs in a higher education setting.
- Cross-cultural skills and strong interest in global education.
- Must have the technical ability and creativity to maintain an online presence through social media management and outreach.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail. Also preferred:
- Previous work with international students.
- Experience as a DSO (Designated School Official).
- Demonstrated experience with program planning.
- Understanding of a residential institution and of the liberal arts educational philosophy.
- Knowledge of a language other than English, prior study, travel or residency outside of the US.
