This position will plan and coordinate international services at Thomas Jefferson University. Reporting to the Senior Associate Provost for Academic Enterprise Initiatives, the Executive Director for International Services will successfully lead employee visa programs and export compliance and will, as needed, provide support to student and exchange visitor services.
Essential Functions
- Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson
- Ensures compliance with all federal regulations for visa programs and export controls
- Manages H-1B and other employment-based visa programs
- Collaborates with HR to support and improve employee visa management and compliance
- Manages relationship with University-approved external immigration counsel
- Provides education, training, and assurance of standard enterprise practices around visa management to HR, hiring departments, and sponsored individuals
- Facilitates export compliance activities
- Collaborates with Research Administration, General Counsel, IS&T, Biosafety, Procurement, Supply Chain and others on implementation of model export compliance program across TJU
- Manages relationship with export control consultant
- Facilitates University Travel Policy updates and initiatives to mitigate risk around University travel
- Collaborates with Student Affairs and Global Centers to support and improve student and exchange visitor services/initiatives
- Supports academic leadership on global engagement initiatives
- Partners with Marketing to ensure web presence for International Services
- Maintains management/performance data on international services Implements best practices in international services
- Performs other duties as assigned
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):
- Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Knowledge of U.S. government regulations governing employee, student, and visitor visa programs
- Knowledge of University export compliance regulations and protocols
- Keeps up-to-date on changes in federal regulations and best practices
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively interpret and explain complex information
- High level of attention to detail Strong customer service mindset and skills
- High level of discretion in handling confidential information
- Familiarity with information management platforms such as Terra Dotta and Cayuse preferred.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Masters in Public Administration, MBA, Masters in International Relations, Masters in Higher Education, Juris Doctor, or equivalent preferred
- 10+ years of related experience, preferably in an academic setting.
- Export compliance certification preferred.
