Summary:

A physical education, health and wellness teacher provides a developmentally appropriate educational program for students. The teacher is responsible for supervising students within the physical education/health classroom and/or gymnasium and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering instruction within established wellness/health curriculum guidelines; adjusting curricula to adapt to children with disabilities or different physical abilities; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators to improve instruction; and engaging parents/guardians in conversations with regard to instructional programs and student progress.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree;
  • A valid license in Secondary Physical Education and Health from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Physical Education, Health or Related Field;
  • Curricula including coursework in physical, health and general education topics, such as exercise physiology, kinesiology, human development and educational psychology;
  • Demonstrated experience with grade-level learning principles.
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor credentials;
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues including, but not limited to meeting the learning needs of a diverse student body, split-second decision making, creative delivery of content, and navigating technology.
  • Practitioner training/experience to operate standard introductory activities, low challenge course activities and initiatives and standard high challenge course activities including training in challenge course rescue procedures, the ability to safely operate climbing towers and other more complex high challenge course activities.
  • Demonstrates a sustained focus on the knowledge, skills, and direct experience necessary to integrate social emotional learning competencies in teaching and other educational contexts.

  • Creates and maintains an effective and developmentally appropriate learning environment for students
  • Prepares daily lessons and activities
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal classroom climate
  • Differentiates instruction for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual need
  • Collects data to document student progress and aid in planning
  • Assesses student progress towards learning targets, objectives, and expectations
  • Provides feedback on progress to students, parents, and administration
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve social, emotional and learning problems
  • Collaborates with colleagues to improve student outcomes
  • Follows specific standards, policies, and procedures of the building and the district
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings and professional development activities
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required for supervision and instruction of the students
  • Consistent, reliable and punctual attendance is essential for supervision and instruction of the students

  • While performing the duties of this job the teacher is frequently required to kneel, stoop, bend, and crouch.
  • The teacher is frequently required to stand; while talking and listening.
  • The teacher is occasionally required to sit; walk; lift; or carry.
  • The teacher is occasionally required to perform heavy lifting of mats and various equipment pieces. Regularly required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. Rarely absent or late unless the situation is of an emergency nature.

Summary:
  • The PE Health and Wellness Department Head provides instructional leadership for the PE, Health and Wellness department. The Department Head also evaluates teachers and provides professional development for department instructors.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher;
  • Appropriate DESE certification;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience teaching Physical Education, Health and Wellness;
  • Ability to handle multitude of varying and complex issues;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Ability to use technology effectively.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Certification in educational leadership (i.e. supervisor/director or principal);
  • Supervisory/managerial experience;
  • Ability to conduct demonstration lessons and coach teachers in the content area;
  • Knowledge of assessment practices, including use of assessment to inform instruction and evaluate programs;
  • Ability to use technology to support instructional strategies;
  • Ability to plan and conduct professional development.

  • Provide curriculum and instructional leadership in the area of Physical Education, Health and Wellness;
  • Assure alignment and consistency in the delivery of Physical Education, Health and Wellness;
  • Serve as primary evaluator for High School Physical Education, Health and Wellness Teachers;
  • Works with principal on staffing and budgeting
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, principals, and central staff
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required
  • Responsible for implementing "other job related duties" as needed
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive and universal design instructional strategies
