The Office of International Programs (OIP), previously referred to as the Office of International Education and Development, is responsible for facilitating global engagement efforts at Appalachian State University (App State). App State combines a strong liberal arts foundation with a comprehensive, pervasive, and integrated commitment to global engagement. App State’s global engagement efforts aim to develop awareness, knowledge, appreciation, and respect of cultural differences in domestic and international contexts in its students, faculty, and staff. The University is also dedicated to creating a campus environment that builds the theoretical and practical skills needed to interact effectively in a global society. Through curriculum, co-curricular activities, relationships with scholars and students from around the world, education abroad programs, grants and scholarships for collaborative research abroad, and numerous cross-cultural programs, App State creates opportunities for students to understand the world and be active participants in it. App State’s ability to fulfill its commitment to global engagement is the result of bright and curious students working with an inspired and diverse faculty and staff, a demanding and interdisciplinary curriculum, and thriving international programs.

 

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs plays a key leadership role in the University’s global engagement efforts and implementing programs that further University-wide academic initiatives for undergraduate and graduate, international education programs that provide opportunities for students to become globally competent critical thinkers. The Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs interacts with many campus partners including, vice-chancellors, associate and assistant vice-chancellors, vice provosts, deans, academic department chairs/academic program directors, and non-academic department leaders.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:

 

 Lead global initiatives at the university-wide level to ensure that App State meets its strategic mission related to global engagement.

 

 Lead the teams in the International Students and Scholars Services and Outreach and Education Abroad.

 

 In consultation with senior leadership, manage the University’s efforts in global engagement, strategic planning, visioning, and implementation.

 

 In partnership with University Advancement, provide strategic direction and active stewardship in fund-raising and external relations for international education.

 

 At the direction of the Chancellor and Provost, lead the University’s international relations, and act as the lead liaison with colleges, schools, departments, corporate, federal, and state partners on global initiatives.

 

 Work closely with academic departments to infuse global content in the curriculum.

 

 Provide strategic leadership and relationship-building to enhance global opportunities for faculty, students, staff, including study, research, and internships abroad as well as global engagement opportunities in North Carolina and across the United States.

 

 In partnership with the Division of Enrollment Management, identify trends in and support for degree-seeking international student undergraduate and graduate student recruiting, retention, and success.

 

 In coordination with Academic Affairs and the Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Emergency Management, provide strategic leadership in the area of Risk Management and International Travel Review Committee for Strategic Global Risk Management.

 

 Identify and enhance global engagement opportunities for App State.

 

 Ensure that the Office is in compliance with all relevant federal and state laws and regulations.

 

 Routinely develop and present insightful data, dashboards and reports that facilitate analysis, assessment of value, and strategic discussions about program progress and opportunities.

According to the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) 2018 Open Doors Report, Appalachian ranks 6th nationally among the comprehensive master’s institutions for the number of total undergraduate and graduate students participating in education abroad experiences for academic credit and 3th nationally among the same types institutions for the number of students who study abroad on short-term programs. Additionally, Appalachian hosts more than 155 international exchange students annually from more than 60 countries.
