The position operates in a multi-cultural setting within the Office of International Student Services and is the essential point of contact for enrolled students, prospective students, alumni, faculty, staff, and visitors. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to processing undergraduate applications for non-citizens, evaluating foreign transcripts for admission, recruitment of international students, leading and/or supporting a variety of programs and student leadership activities, ensuring compliance with student immigration regulations, and providing support with referrals for academic, cultural, personal, and practical problems. This position reports to Director of International Student Services and is essential in the service and management of programs within the Office of International Student Services.

Core Duties
  • Manage communications with prospective international students regarding the application process and status updates. Act as the primary resource for providing information about the University of Portland for international applicants.
  • Assist with the recruitment and inquiries for prospective international students via online recruiting tools. Develop and support campaigns and strategies for student recruitment, engagement and retention in collaboration with the Director of International Student Services and office of Admissions.
  • Read, evaluate, and make recommendations about international applications and other foreign transcripts sent to the University. Provide recommendations for admission to the Dean of Admissions and Academic Deans.
  • Process applications and related documents for non-citizens as first year students, undergraduate transfer students and prospective graduate students. Act as a liaison between International Student Services and the Office of Admissions.
  • Maintain data on prospective, admitted and confirmed international students. Input documents into Slate/Etrieve and monitor workflows.
  • Prepare and post admission, immigration and other non-citizen documents.
  • Track admitted students through the confirmation process and provide support in preparation for attending and arriving to the University.
  • Administer scholarship process for international graduate students, including revision of scholarship forms and policies and award scholarships. Act as a liaison to the Office of Financial Aid regarding scholarship programs.
  • Lead international student events which includes but is not limited to international student orientation at the start of each semester, International Education Week and Campus Connector programs.
  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
  • Process initial I-20s and DS-2019s for incoming students on F-1 and J-1 visas. Provide information and advising to students related to F-1 and J-1 regulations and requirements.
  • Advise students on immigration requirements, permissions, applications, and processes, including those other than F and J status.
  • Provide international students with assistance and referrals for academic, cultural, personal and practical problems while attending University of Portland.
  • Promote cross-cultural awareness and education within the University community. Collaborate with campus partners to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for international students.
  • Manage Office of International Student Services email inquiries and oversee bulk mailings to prospective, admitted and confirmed students.
  • Hire, supervise, and train student employees, including international student admissions ambassadors. Supervisory responsibilities include hiring processes, setting of expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes including termination of employment.

Education & Experience
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in related field with a minimum of one-year experience working with international students.
  • Required: One year experience evaluating international educational credentials and knowledge of student-related immigration regulations and the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS).
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in related fields with three or more years' experience working with international admissions and international students.
  • Preferred: Experience working in an international student center and living abroad.
  • Preferred: Basic understanding of Banner, electronic software and reporting software.
  • Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

Certifications & Licenses
  • Required: None.

  • Significant experience working with international students, evaluating international educational credentials.
  • Knowledge of student-related immigration regulations and the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS).
  • Strong ability in providing student leadership training and cross-cultural adjustment support.
  • Strong understanding of cross-cultural adjustment process.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

In most situations, the necessity of learning, using, and supporting new technologies, software, and/or applications does not change a nor make the position one that involves higher level duties.
