Reporting to the Dean of the Graduate School, the assistant dean provides subject-matter expertise and strategic leadership for student services and ensures the infusion of diversity, equity, and inclusion in every activity of the Graduate School through innovative and multi-dimensional approaches. This position is responsible for supporting a sense of community and belonging for graduate students, increasing inclusion and diversity within our community, implementing best practices of accessibility, and championing reflection and action to advance these goals. Major responsibilities include:
● Representing the Graduate School in university committees and commissions; building and maintaining strategic partnerships; and serving as a resource and consultant to the Graduate School team regarding inclusive practices in policies and procedures, internal operations and student engagement, including planning, facilitating, and evaluating processes of organizational change.
● Providing strategic direction for graduate student services, including broad oversight of budget and activities
● Leading the planning and execution of the annual HBCU-MSI summit in collaboration with Graduate School and campus partners
● Teaching the GRAD 5214 course, Diversity and Inclusion for a Global Society in fall and spring
● Tracking the Graduate School D&I requirement; documenting and sharing best practices with departments and programs; providing training and assessment of program effectiveness; managing the Inclusion and Diversity certificate program
● Collaborating with VT Chief Diversity Officers and Academic Diversity Officers, and the institution's Office of Inclusion and Diversity
● Attending national conferences and serving as a thought leader and strategic partner internally and externally
● Conducting research and pursuing grants

Required Qualifications
- Earned doctorate or terminal degree in relevant field;
- Demonstrated track record of strategic thinking and ability to envision and carry out long-term projects that bring about systemic change.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience, including group facilitation and presentation skills and experience with writing proposals and reports.
- Knowledge of diversity as a workplace and classroom issue; experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
- Experience with supervision
- Ability to gather and analyze data and make and implement data-informed decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience at the university level
- Experience in graduate or professional education
- Understanding of and experience with graduate student services
