Job Description:

Franklin & Marshall College has initiated a search for an Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and College House Dean. The College House Dean will be one of a cohort of five House Deans, who are members of a faculty and professional staff team charged with supporting and enhancing the residential and co-curricular experience of students residing in and affiliated with the house.

In this role, the College House Dean partners with a House Don, a member of the Faculty, to foster a distinctive House community where intellectual and social interests are explored and students develop a sense of identity and connection. The College Houses integrate and enrich the academic, residential, and social life of students. House programs and informal environments are central to the College's education of informed, open-minded, and critically inquisitive students.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the College House Dean is an integral member of the Office of Student Affairs, administering House operations; advising House students; and educating students about community standards. House Deans, in collaboration with their Faculty Don, house governments and their student House Advisor staff, work to develop a residential-based academic, cultural, and co-curricular program of activities to develop the whole student. College House Deans and House Dons partner to implement budget priorities and plan expenditure decisions.

Essential Functions:
  • Facilitate and cultivate a sense of community within the House that encourages good citizenship and promotes the value of living in a diverse community.
  • Actively develop and promote community initiatives designed to engage students in the college experience based on national best practices and supporting the college's mission of inclusion, diversity and equity.
  • Select, train, and supervise House Advisors (HAs), who provide guidance to new students, facilitate weekly Keystone Crew meetings, host house programs, and address violations of House and College policy.
  • Help residents understand their rights and responsibilities as good citizens by explaining and enforcing college policies, housing regulations and procedures.
  • Work with students to solve community and individual student concerns, cultivating relationships with students and parents in order to provide support and guidance for each student in resolving situations.
  • Work with the House student leaders and the Don to ensure the success of the House government.
  • Provide support and guidance for students within the House who are not performing well academically.
  • Work with appropriate offices, including the Registrar and the Student Wellness Center, in determining and facilitating leaves of absence, incompletes, and other exceptional academic arrangements.
  • With the Care Coordinator, respond to reports regarding students of concern and serve on the DipCares team.
  • Monitor House budgets ensuring reimbursements and expenditures are submitted appropriately.
  • Work closely with the other House Deans, Dons, and the orientation planning team to facilitate and implement College House aspects of New Student Orientation.
  • Develop and facilitate special projects in support of the student life mission.
  • Work collaboratively with the other House Deans as a team on a variety of programs and matters that relate to all the College Houses.
  • Assist in the coordination of on-site and front-line response to crisis situations. Spend several weeks per year in the "administrator on call" rotation for the College as a whole.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An advanced degree (Master's Degree or higher) in student affairs, higher education, counseling or a related field.
  • Four or more years of professional experience working with college-age students in higher education or a related-field.
  • Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to inclusivity.
  • Advanced level knowledge of current theories, processes and practices related to student affairs, student development, Title IX, orientation, residential education, and leadership development.
  • A strong preference will be given to candidates who have college or university experience in student conduct, crisis management and/or residential life staff supervision and program design.
  • Experience with student activities and event planning is desired.
  • An established history of responding effectively in emergency situations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing, and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team are critical.
  • An understanding of, experience in, and commitment to the aims of a liberal arts education.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with students, faculty and staff; to partner with the House Don and student leaders to promote the College's academic mission; and to initiate, plan, coordinate, and evaluate programs and events in support of the House mission.
  • Ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential.
