The Center for International Education at Madison College is seeking a Study Abroad and Engagement Specialist. This position will deliver Study Abroad and Virtual Exchange advising and case management, as well as lead, develop, and coordinate campus-wide programming related to International Education. This position will focus on supporting diverse groups, including study abroad applicants, virtual exchange participants, international students, and historically underrepresented students in international education.

The Study Abroad and Engagement Specialist serves as a liaison to community partners and faculty, supports the unit's strategic goals, and enhances student access, retention, and success. This position advises students on developing meaningful plans that utilize international experience to support their academic, career and life goals. The Study Abroad and Engagement Specialist also develops and facilitates campus-wide programming designed to advance cross-cultural understanding, cultural humility, global citizenship, diversity, equity and inclusion, student engagement, and leadership development. Additionally, the specialist may serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) in compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

This position reports to the Manager, Center for International Education.

This is a full-time, 52-weeks per year position, general working hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm. Currently this position is hybrid, with 2-3 days on campus and the remainder virtual.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Delivers international education advising for students and alumni. Provides advising to students exploring study abroad and virtual exchange opportunities. Utilizes formal and informal assessments, technology, and online resources to help students decide on which program to participate, how to live and study successfully in another culture, and how to represent Madison College and the U.S. positively as a global ambassador. Reviews student documents to assess program eligibility and decides on acceptance or denial. Advises students on applications for study abroad, virtual exchange, and scholarships. Provides emergency assistance and delivers other support where appropriate. Applies both student development theory and understanding of international regulations in advising students. Promotes a culture of access, inclusivity, and equity. Respects, advocates, and supports the diversity of students and the college community. Provides case management support to all students with special attention to facilitating access for historically underrepresented students in study abroad. Assists students in complying with college requirements. Responds to student concerns and refers to appropriate resources. May serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for Madison College in compliance with the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
  • Serves as lead for development and coordination of programming activities and corresponding promotional materials for the Center for International Education to promote cross-cultural understanding, cultural humility, global citizenship, diversity, equity, and inclusion, student engagement and leadership development. Develops and leads classroom presentations, workshops, and other events to promote understanding of international student services, education abroad opportunities, and intercultural engagement.
  • Develops, oversees, and manages Cultural Connect (student peer mentoring program) including planning and implementing a mentor orientation and training, attending activities, checking-in with mentors, and training and supervising Cultural Connect graduate intern/student workers.
  • Develops and maintains resources, materials and forms for students and partners, including those maintained virtually or in databases. Guides development of marketing materials and resources for students (brochures, web content, flyers, resource guides, etc.). Organizes and presents at student recruitment fairs, faculty/student workshops, and other events. Develops online portal information to deliver virtual support.
  • Advises students in complying with college requirements. Resolves questions or concerns on college policies, procedures, and interpretation as presented by students and faculty. Responds to student concerns and refer to appropriate resources. Assists with resolution.
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date knowledge of study abroad, virtual exchange, and programming best practices and trends in international education. Establishes relationships with other college staff and professional organizations. Participates in professional development activities and professional organizations nationally and internationally. Travels internationally to support program development, evaluation, and execution.
  • Maintains a commitment to the college mission, vision, and values. Comply with college policies, directives, and work rules. Engages positively with colleagues, handles conflict directly and professionally, contributes to team discussions, collaborates, and helps colleagues, assumes the best from colleagues, provides, and accepts constructive feedback, follows through on commitments, and supports final decisions that are made.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization not limited to students, staff, alumni, community members and external stakeholders with broadly diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience in student advising including knowledge of confidentiality requirements and ethical standards related to serving international and domestic students. Knowledge of FERPA regulation as it pertains to student records, access, and confidentiality. Ability to make appropriate referrals not limited to counseling, disability resources, and enrollment services. Knowledge of student development and learning theory and principles.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated abilities in performing study abroad advising and case management. Ability to engage in international travel to support the needs of international programs and the Center.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent working experience. *Experience used as an equivalent of an educational requirement is in addition to any experience required by the position.
  • Two (2) years (4,000 hours) of directly related work experience in Study Abroad, Virtual Exchange, or related international education field.
  • Although not a requirement, training or experience in federal student visa regulations is preferred.
