SUMMARY

Provides academic and career support to disabled students. Reviews documentation to assess the need for accommodations. Facilitates and tracks student data and progress. Conducts educational classes and workshops. Collaborates with faculty, staff, and counselors to ensure optimum student support. Assists in providing accessibility to classes and programs while maintaining documentation of all rendered services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Reviews documentation to assess the need for accommodations
  • Identifies and selects new participants based on federal eligibility criteria
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation of all necessary data to ensure compliance with the U.S. Department of Education
  • Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College
  • Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion
  • Conducts educational classes and workshops
  • Serves as a liaison between faculty, staff and community agencies regarding services for disabled students
  • Meets regularly with staff for participant and program evaluations
  • Works collaboratively with the Counseling department to ensure efficient student referrals when needed
  • Meets with faculty regarding student progress and course content/materials, as needed
  • Assists in writing and editing of departmental documents and other correspondence as needed
  • May attend meetings, workshops and conferences for professional development
  • Assists with metric tracking and report preparation
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/TRAINING
  • Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Education, Special Education or a related field

o Significant related experience may substitute for education
  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated College-level experience advising, counseling, and/or teaching experience students with disabilities in an academic setting
  • Demonstrated experience making sound decisions that affect a work unit or team
  • Demonstrated experience in a role requiring diverse problem solving methods in a variety of situations

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • Possess knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to develop and implement creative strategic community development relations plan
  • Possess strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work accurately with great attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize/handle multiple tasks and work with deadlines in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to promote collaboration, teamwork, and involve all stakeholders in decision-making processes
  • Possess sound understanding of the needs of community college students
  • Ability to work well with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and community agencies
  • Ability to enter, monitor and interpret student data accurately
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and proven ability to develop and sustain productive customer relationships
  • Ability to effectively complete work assignments independently
  • Possess working knowledge of student advising concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use in varied situations as it pertains to the departmental focus
  • Demonstrated basic project management skills
  • Demonstrated intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to confidentially and discreetly handle subject matters requiring privacy and sensitivity
  • Ability to collaborate, persuade, gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas on significant projects
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with key contacts to enhance work flow and quality
  • Possess sensitivity to appropriately respond to the needs of a diverse population

  • Master's Degree in Counseling or a related field
  • Possess related professional licensure or certifications

  • The work is performed in a normal, professional office environment;
  • The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated;
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the duties of the job and will perform repetitive motions with hands/fingers using a computer mouse and keyboard to type. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, files, pamphlets, books, etc.;
  • Work may also require walking and standing in conjunction with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite
