Department Summary
UCLA's Economics Department has two interlocking objectives. We conduct cutting edge research by developing new methodologies and applying them to understand society's most critical issues. We also seek to train the next generation of economic leaders in the private sector, government and academia.UCLA is one of the top-ranked economics departments in the world. We have a young and active faculty whose research is shaping policy and informing the public on critical issues affecting the United States and the world. Our work covers a diversity of topics such as the origins and persistence of the Great Depression and its lessons for today's economy, the relationship between education and health outcomes, cartels and antitrust policy, the economics of health care, and the impact of immigration on labor markets. Many of our faculty have received special recognition for their body of research by election to prestigious institutions such as the National Academy of Science, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and the Econometric Society, or have received such celebrated awards such as the Guggenheim and Sloan Fellowships.Our undergraduates are equally impressive. They are among the brightest students on campus and consistently go on to find success in the job market and in graduate school. We have approximately 3300 majors at any one time making us the largest among major economics departments across the country and the largest major on campus. Our students come from over 60 countries around the world yet the majority call California their home. Many of our students are the first in their families to attend college and we are proud of them and their accomplishments.Our Alumni play important roles in business, entertainment, and academia. We are proud that many maintain strong ties with UCLA and with the Economics department. Our students attend business schools, law school, medical schools, and graduate schools in a variety of disciplines.
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, serve as a Senior Undergraduate Student Affairs Officer for approximately 3,400 undergraduate students in the Department of Economics. Major duties include counseling students on requirements for two departmental majors and related programs. Advise students on courses for the majors, as well as on University and College requirements. Counsel students on general procedures and information regarding enrollment and course planning, as well as those having scholastic difficulty. Refer students to campus resources such as general academic counselors, counselors in other departments, the Registrar's Office, Undergraduate Admission, and the International Education office. Assist students with a variety of departmental and College petitions. Lead group orientation sessions for the entering freshman and transfer students. Maintain student records both in the departmental office and through campus systems such as the Degree Audit Report System (DARS) and Counselor Desktop. Serve as a resource to the Vice Chair of Undergraduate Education and the Director of the Business Economics program, providing statistics and reports as well as advising on policies and regulations. Lead the organization of the Department of Economics Commencement.

Qualifications
3 years Previous advising or student service,or equivalent training experience (Required) AndKnowledge of University student services such as Counseling and Psychological Services, Career Center, College Academic Counseling, Registrar's Office, and other resource centers and services to assist students in need. (Required)Working knowledge of the department's program requirements and regulations for undergraduate degrees, including specific College of Letters and Science policies. (Required)Skill in dealing with confidential matters with tact and sensitivity, especially in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility. (Required)Skill in establishing and maintaining confidential student files. Follow established protocol for file management (both paper and electronic files). (Required)Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing to convey accurate and timely information to individuals at various organizational levels. (Required)Ability to work independently and with frequent interruptions on multiple projects while ensuring accurate, timely completion of projects and tasks. (Required)Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and complete assignments with minimal follow up required from supervisor. (Required)Demonstrated ability to work independently and with frequent interruptions and remain friendly and helpful (Required) Demonstrated skill in using Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Demonstrated ability to compose, edit and proofread reports, memos and other correspondence according to standard English grammar, punctuation and prose. (Required)Knowledge of University procedures as they relate to undergraduates. Ability to create reports and use various computer systems including OASIS, DARS, Counselor Desktop, Commencement Administrator, and moodle (Required) Skill in obtaining and conveying information in a clear and distinct manner to faculty, staff, and students.Skill in mediating between contending parties. (Required)
