The Director, Membership and Career Center leads NAFSA’s efforts to acquire and retain members and builds robust systems for identifying and successfully encouraging engagement in NAFSA programs and activities within the global higher education marketplace. The incumbent also manages NAFSA’s Career Center aimed at providing job posting services year-round and a career development and mentoring program at the NAFSA annual conference. This position is also responsible for developing and managing a career professional development program for members that is deployed throughout the year. 

 

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Steward relationships with member account contacts and stakeholders and ensure outstanding customer care to all members and member prospects. (40%) 

  • Troubleshoot to provide timely and effective issues resolution for escalated inquiries, together with the Program Manager, Marketing and Membership or staff support team. 
  • Advise senior management on full range of member-related matters.
  • Develop meaningful training opportunities about member benefits for NAFSA’s cross-departmental Membership team and other aligned staff partners. 
  • Communicate membership updates and plans to NAFSA staff and serve as an enthusiastic advocate for membership.

Meet and exceed established annual membership recruitment goals. (25%)

  • Collaborate with the Marketing team and the knowledge community liaisons, developing annual strategies and tactical plans focused on member acquisition and retention. 
  • Develop and regularly update strategic member and non-member outreach and engagement messaging that leverages valued membership program, product and, services benefits. Communicate the value of member benefits to members and the marketplace.

Compile data and information in ways that point to membership solutions. Support marketing and marketing partners with multiple lists for acquisition and retention programs. (10%)

  • Update and administer biennial member survey.

Oversee a dynamic program of activities for NAFSA Career Center at the NAFSA annual conference, including career-focused presentations and the NAFSA Career Adviser Program. (10%)

  • In collaboration with external partner, manage NAFSA Jobs on the Career Center site to meet revenue goals.

Engage and build relationships with NAFSA regions as potential conduits for membership growth. (5%)

 

Document with the membership support team all member servicing and reporting procedures. (5%)

 

Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS (Required)

Bachelor’s degree relevant to position requirements, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum five years of progressive experience in membership management.
  • A track record of excellent customer relations support using a variety of communication mediums and platforms.
  • Experience with project management and coordination of volunteer groups or components. 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, take initiative, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment as well as problem-solve in a complex, fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to lead in a team setting, while handling issues with confidence, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Experience communicating and delivering presentations through web-based applications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite products.

QUALIFICATIONS (Preferred)

Master’s degree relevant to position requirements.

  • 10 years of membership, customer care, or career services experience serving diverse, multicultural member or customer services organization(s).
  • Experience with member data management and analysis.
  • Experience with database software, as well as various web or cloud-based conferencing platforms.
  • Financial modeling and forecasting experience.
  • International membership development and/or business development.
  • Campaign marketing experience.
  • Career services or counseling experience.
  • Ability to present and deliver webinars.
  • Ability to master various technology, web, and data management systems.  
  • Supervisory skills and experience.
  • Previous experience with NAFSA, international education, or other association membership, or nonprofit organizations.

  

Office Environment

The workday is generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The week after Memorial Day to Labor Day, it is 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.

 
Travel is required occasionally related to job responsibilities, especially for the annual conference, regional meetings, and other leadership meetings. Participation in the NAFSA annual conference the week of Memorial Day, including the holiday itself, is a job requirement. The annual conference is held in varying cities.

 
Total Compensation, Benefits

The hiring annual salary for this full-time, 35-hour per week Director, Membership & Career Center position is targeted at $105,000. Total compensation for employment at NAFSA entails a competitive employee benefits package, including:
