Position Description:

The primary function of the Student Services Specialist I is to assist in the coordination and implementation of the Student Success Center’s (SSC) first-generation and student success programming, which supports holistic student development and promotes retention, persistence, and degree completion for all students. This position contributes to the overall success of the SSC program by affecting participant engagement and maintaining positive relations between participants and mentors.

The Student Services Specialist I supports the operations of the SSC with responsibilities ranging from program planning and execution, facilitating workshops and presentations, and serving as the backup front desk assistant and student assistant supervisor.

In support of student success, the Student Services Specialist I instructs the SSC’s first-year experience course and represents the SSC as needed for student success initiatives and speaking engagements with university offices and student groups.

The Student Success Center team provides comprehensive support and programming to undergraduate students including Exploratory & Transition Academic Advising, student success coaching to help students navigate any roadblock they encounter on their path to graduation, managing strategic student communications, and offering first-generation student programs.

There are two positions available. Each position is 80% FTE/30 hours a week (Part-Time).

Responsibilities include:
  • Serving students, faculty, staff, and community members as the point person for Student Success program inquiries and information.
  • Planning, developing, and implementing Student Success Center programs including logistics, catering, registration, and supply and event management.
  • Assisting with recruitment, onboarding, and retention of program participants.
  • Collaborating and fostering communications between program students and mentors.
  • Maintaining program participation records, inventory tracking, evaluation, and any related follow-up tasks.
  • Facilitating engaging and informative presentations to students, families, and community members about SSC programs and initiatives.
  • Instructing, under supervision, the Student Success Center’s first-year academic orientation course for exploratory and transition students.
  • Serving as a backup front desk assistant and student assistant supervisor, covering the SSC front desk, answering calls, and supporting the student assistants.
  • Pursuing professional development opportunities focused on improving student success to enhance knowledge and expand effectiveness in this role.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in a higher education environment/setting is preferred, especially with event programming/planning, marketing/communication, or student services.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Ability to create developmentally-appropriate presentation and course content and facilitate student learning.

  • Applies a high level of interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving, time management, and organization.
  • Comfortable working with diverse student populations, including but not limited to first-generation students and limited-income students.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
