Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position):
To enhance the international student experience at St. Olaf College. International Student Counselors facilitate international student orientation programs, mentor and support between 8-10 incoming international students throughout their first year, and provide interactive programs throughout the academic year to enhance internationalization on campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Communicate with incoming international students over the summer, prior to their arrival at St. Olaf, by answering their questions or making referrals.
• Assist with the arrival of new international students and co-facilitate the international student orientation programs.
• Advise and support 8-10 counselees-meeting with each counselee at least once per month during the academic year. Within the limits of training and capability, advise and counsel students on academic, personal, and social matters, and make referrals when appropriate.
• Serve as a leader and role model to all international students. Help develop an atmosphere in the international community in which students respect and support one another.
• Attend meetings and training sessions:
o Weekly meetings
o Additional training as need
o Mid-year and end of the year review
• Plan, organize and lead interactive international student focused programs and events
o Develop proposals for events
o Collaborate on team projects
o Create flyers, posters and materials for events
o Distribute publicity on campus and online
o Drive college vehicles (if authorized as certified driver)
o Take photographs
• Serve as a liaison between student organizations, college staff and faculty, and departments
• Establish and maintain open communication with supervisor and coordinating staff on international student needs and issues.
Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills)
• Ability to work with and welcome students of diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Basic understanding and knowledge of St. Olaf campus resources.
• Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills including the ability to listen, advise, teach, and explain
• Must be on campus for both the fall and spring semesters (this does not include Interim).
• Must also be available: academic year training dates and first year international orientation dates.
