Job Details
POSITION PURPOSE:
The Director of International Student and Scholar Services takes the leading role in ensuring Whitman College’s
institutional compliance with federal regulations related to F-1 international student enrollment and J-1 visiting
scholars. The Director provides ongoing support to approximately 300 international students and scholars
annually, advocates for their needs across the college, and facilitates international student engagement with the
broader community. This position is in-person during the academic year with the option of hybrid work during the summer.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Federal Immigration Compliance (40%)
2. Support for International Students on Campus (30%)
3. Orientation for New International Students & Scholars (10%)
4. ISSS-Related Technology (10%)
5. Support for International Alumni (10%)
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Applicants must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to
safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
1. Knowledge and skills to keep the College in compliance with federal laws governing the stay of F and J visa
holders, including working knowledge of international tax treaties, Social Security requirements and the
Code of Federal Regulations interpreted by NAFSA.
2. Critical thinking skills and ability to exercise sound judgment in complex advising situations that are not
specifically addressed within the F-1 and J-1 regulations.
3. Interpersonal skills for working in cross-cultural settings with various constituencies (college students,
parents, faculty and staff colleagues) and ability to work effectively with those whose first language is not
English.
4. Commitment to advancing the College’s core values of diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism.
5. Time management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
6. High standard of discretion in handling confidential information.
7. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, and attention to detail.
8. Knowledge of Google apps, Microsoft apps, familiarity with any international student management
software (e.g., Sunapsis, Terra Dotta), and Zoom conferencing.
9. Ability to travel domestically a few times annually for professional meetings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor's degree.
2. Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in an international office as a PDSO or DSO.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Active NAFSA: Association of International Educators membership.
2. Experience living outside the United States (such as studying or working abroad).
