The Department of International Studies and Global Affairs at St. Mary's University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in security studies with an open regional focus (Asia or Africa are preferred) beginning August 2025. The position will entail teaching three- course load per semester, research, administration, advising, and service in both interdisciplinary M.A. Program in International Relations and B.A. International and Global Studies. A Ph.D. in International Relations, Security Studies, or a related field is required at the time of appointment; ABD applicants will be considered.
Candidates at the assistant professor level should have a record of excellence in teaching both in person and online courses, as well as a record of successful peer-reviewed publication in scholarly journals which is essential for a graduate-level position. Candidates must provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centered environment. The successful candidate will be required to make substantive contributions through service to the department, the University, and the broader community. Applicants should also recognize that the Department of International Studies and Global Affairs and St. Mary's University are faith-based with an emphasis in social justice and the common good.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching in our security policy concentration along with non-traditional security issues and general core (International Political Economy, National Security, International Relations Theory, Research and Writing in IR). Some international field experience is desirable.
The International and Global Studies program offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with four tracks (General Studies, Economic and Trade Affairs, Political and Cultural Affairs, and Latin American Studies). The Graduate International Relations Program offers the Master of Arts degree to a diverse student population from a variety of countries and backgrounds, including students who have recently completed their undergraduate degrees and mid-career professionals. It currently includes on-campus and online programs with 2 focus areas: 1) security policy and 2) sustainable development and conflict transformation.
