DIRECTOR / STUDY ABROAD

Position Summary:

This position provides leadership in the direction and administration of study abroad programs, including supervising the study abroad staff, overseeing risk management for study abroad, developing and upholding policies and procedures related to study abroad, and working with faculty and academic leadership to integrate study abroad into the educational experience. 

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree
Five years experience in international education
Experience living or studying outside the United States.
Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree.
Fluency in a foreign language. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Advocates on behalf of study abroad among campus partners. Recommends and maintains policies and procedures related to study abroad programs in coordination with campus partners (registrar, financial aid, risk management, general counsel, admissions, etc.). Ensures policies and procedures are reflective of best practices, are efficient, and conducive to meeting goals. Manages study abroad staff, supports their ongoing development, and actively addresses personnel concerns. Hires, trains, and evaluates study abroad staff. Makes strategic plans and related budget requests for study abroad operations in consultation with the Senior Vice Provost for Academic and Curricular Affairs (SVP -ACA ) Advocates for study abroad scholarship funding and oversees study abroad scholarship awarding process. Reviews and provides feedback on faculty led proposals and budgets along with Assistant Director (Faculty-led Programs), and Deans. Responds to escalated situations or requests as necessary. Develops and maintains standard operating procedures manual for study abroad operations. Ensures the integrity of study abroad data and responds to data requests as needed. Develops and executes assessment plan that regularly evaluates effectiveness of study abroad advising and programming; disseminates and gathers program evaluations and post-program faculty reports; supports relevant campus partners with assessment of learning outcomes as needed. Stays attuned to real and perceived barriers to student participation in study abroad programs; works with campus partners to reduce barriers in order to increase access to and participation in study abroad. In consultation with SVP -ACA , communicates with overseas study abroad partners to develop and revise terms of agreements in consultation with SVP -ACA , makes recommendations regarding new overseas opportunities and assists in program development as needed. Monitors world events and serves as primary point of contact for student emergencies abroad. Develops, maintains, and applies vetting protocol for study abroad partners. Develops and manages an international travel registry for CMU related student travel (other than formal study abroad), conducts outreach to the university community to promote participation in travel registry. Coordinates the Travel Health and Safety committee and calls meetings as necessary to review requests for travel to restricted locations. Liaises with university Risk Management Office regarding international health insurance policy and communicates as needed during international emergencies. Ensures international programs are compliant with related laws and institutional policies (Clery Act, Title IX, HIPAA , ADA , GDPR , etc.). Reviews and updates all health, safety, and security information provided to study abroad program participants and faculty leaders (online orientation, health forms, waivers, etc.). Provides advice on risk management for study abroad programs, including development of a safety audit checklist and recommendations on program activities; communicates with internal and external audiences to regularly assess the safety of study abroad programs. Liaises with CMU Health Services and other campus partners as needed regarding the study abroad health clearance process; assists faculty program directors and overseas partners in developing plans to support students’ individual health/accommodation matters as necessary; liaises with OCRIE , CMU Police, and other campus partners as necessary to respond to reported incidents involving CMU students abroad. Stays informed of industry best practices, trends and discussions. Develops and maintains professional relationships with external experts such as US Dept of State, Overseas Advisory Council, Forum on Education Abroad, NAFSA , etc. Regularly communicates with SVP -ACA and other campus stakeholders to provide relevant and timely updates on study abroad operations. Contributes to university-wide initiative to support campus internationalization. Other duties as assigned.

About the Department:

The Office of Global Engagement works with students interested in studying or interning abroad and with faculty interested in leading short-term students groups. It is an exciting and busy office that offers both in-person and online appointments to provide advising and support to the campus community we serve. We offer the annual Study Abroad Fair, Study Abroad Week, regular workshops for students to guide them about programs and funding sources, and also provide workshops and orientations for faculty who are interested in leading student groups abroad.
