The University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM) offers interdisciplinary BA and MA degree programs and Graduate Certificates in the study of China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Inter-Asia. The Department of Asian Studies seeks a collegial and talented colleague to contribute to all three of its degree programs, and in particular to its growing portfolio of courses on Asian International Affairs. These courses combine the interdisciplinary, Asia-centric perspectives provided by area studies with policy-relevant research and teaching (for more information, see https://manoa.hawaii.edu/asianstudies/academic-programs/graduate-programs-in-asian-studies/).
Duties and Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications
Earned PhD in a humanities, social sciences, or related field from a university of recognized standing (ABDs will be considered, but all requirements for doctoral degree must be completed by August 2025);
Demonstrated expertise in contemporary Japan, Korea or South Asia and their relations with other Asian countries in the fields of traditional and/or non-traditional security;
Evidence of research and teaching grounded in a deep understanding of the histories, political cultures and domestic societies of one or more Asian countries and how these connect to the security situations and practices of the country or region;
Full professional proficiency in a relevant Asian language and evidence of an active research agenda Asia;
Ability to develop and teach innovative interdisciplinary courses at the undergraduate level and core courses in Asian International Affairs at the graduate level;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff and administrators.
Desirable Qualifications
Research that examines issues in traditional and/or non-traditional security (including environment, health, food, cybersecurity, transnational crime, economic security, etc.) in Japan, Korea, or South Asia, and in their relations with other Asian countries;
Expertise in policy-relevant areas of research and/or experience engaging with policy-makers;
Demonstrated ability to support the university’s mission of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Enthusiasm for developing teaching and service activities that contribute to UHM’s goal of becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning.

- Advise undergraduate and graduate students;
- Serve on graduate committees;
- Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication;
- Participate in Asian Studies and Asian International Affairs program-building and other service work for the department, college, university, and broader communities;
- Work collaboratively and collegially with diverse groups of students and faculty;
- Other duties as assigned by the Chair.
