Vice President and Saunders Director, Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation (Monticello) seeks a visionary leader to become the Saunders Director of the International Center for Jefferson Studies (ICJS) and a Vice President of the Foundation. As the scholarly hub of Monticello, ICJS serves both the mass public that engages with our interpretation on site and online, and the fields of “Jefferson Studies,” broadly defined. The Saunders Director leads Monticello’s diverse research programs in the fields of early American history, African American studies, architectural and art history, plantation archaeology, and museum studies and public history. A member of Monticello’s senior leadership team and a key strategic partner for the President, the Saunders Director works closely with Monticello divisions and departments beyond ICJS, including Curatorial and Restoration, Guest Experiences, and External Relations. The successful candidate will be a scholar of demonstrated excellence, an innovative and committed collaborator dedicated to fostering the talents of their team, and a highly effective communicator, with a deep commitment to public history resting on research of the highest caliber.
For consideration, please submit a detailed letter of application, a curriculum vitae , and the names and contact information of three people to whom we can reach out for recommendations. Candidates who advance in the search will be invited to share examples of their work with the committee. Finalists will be asked to make a presentation of their scholarship and vision to Monticello stakeholders.
Review of completed applications will begin August 15 and continue until the job is filled.
