Organization Summary
East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.
ESH is directly responsible for the administration of Lehman YABCs Learning-to-Work Program, which enhances the school’s academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships. Lehman Young Adult Borough Center (YABC) is an alternative afternoon and evening program designed to meet the educational needs of high school students who are behind in credits or have adult responsibilities that make it hard to attend school during the day. Students attend YABCs part-time in the afternoon or evening to earn a high school diploma. The YABC program is designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school.
Under the direction of the Program Director the Student Advisor will provide support over a wide variety of areas including college and career readiness, academic progress monitoring, day-to-day student issues, social-emotional and personal development. Student Advisors will follow the Primary Person Model where they will be the first point of contact for students, parents and staff members. It is expected to work collaboratively with our partner school faculty and staff to ensure each student’s academic success.

Remote Work
ESH has determined that up to 10% of this position can be remote due to COVID-19. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.
Supervisory Responsibility
The role has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel
Minimal travel is expected for this position (on a need basis). Most travel will be conducted for the purpose of chaperoning trips, attending ESH events, and conducting home visits.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is generally a sedentary role; however, some filing and site visits are required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Primary Functions
Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:
- Be a primary person of contact for a caseload of approximately 60-70 students
- Conduct intake interviews with students and family members
- Conduct daily attendance, academic, and social-emotional outreach via phone, remotely, or home visit
- Consult with guidance counselors on student credit accumulation, graduation date, and post-secondary plans
- Consult with teachers and provide feedback to students on academic performance
- Refer students to academic and support services as needed
- Attend administrative meetings, program trainings and staff development. Meetings may require virtual attendance
- Meet with caseload in a group or individual setting to assist them in their academic, career, and personal goals. Some individual and group work will require the usage of remote platforms, or be socially distanced
- Conduct workshops, social-emotional groups, interest groups, or other groups for caseload
- Educate students about colleges, the college admissions process, FAFSA, trends, procedures, and testing; advise students as they go through the process and help them aspire realistically and choose wisely
- Walk students through employment opportunities
- Conduct informal counseling sessions for students to support their social-emotional development
- Document all interactions with students on Salesforce, Google Suite, and other data systems as required
- Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development
- Participate and help arrange field trips, special events and extracurricular activities
- Provide other program support functions as required

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience
- B.A/ B.S.W. degree is required with at least two years youth services experience.
- Excellent verbal, analytical, written, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and multi-task.
- Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community service/ development.
- Minimum intermediate knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office including Word and Teams / Google Suite, Zoom, and other applications.
