Duties and Responsibilities
  • *Conducts group and individual academic advising sessions and workshops for TIM students on degree requirements, developing an academic plan (e.g. study abroad, internship, major/minor certificates), policies, and procedures.
  • *Provides academic advising to prospective students on admissions and degree requirements.
  • *Provides mandatory academic advising and monitors academic progress for all TIM students.
  • *Conducts preliminary and final graduation checks for students.
  • *Plans and implements programs such as retention, recruitment, study abroad, and other academic advising support programs and services.
  • *Updates academic files for all undergraduate students and assists with enrollment and student progress data as needed.
  • *Assists in the development and maintenance of program information documents for degree requirements, student recruiting, and monitoring of student progress.
  • *Establishes and maintains regular communication with undergraduate students via email and other means to facilitate access to research, scholarships, internships, employment, and other opportunities for students.
  • *Supervises the use and assignment of Manoa Peer Advisors (MPAs) and student clerical assistants.
  • *Represents TIM at recruitment events to promote the undergraduate program. Attends high school and college/career fairs and plans and coordinates high school visits to TIM.
  • *Assists with the processing of transfer credit evaluations.
  • *Provide departmental authorization for students in selected courses for registration.
  • *Assists with registration, override entries, and general student assistance during registration period
  • *Provides ongoing support to projects and/or activities assigned to the Student Services Office by the Dean's Office.
  • *Plans and implements scholarship programs for TIM students, including coordination of scholarship applications, awards; overseeing scholarship programming (e.g., promotional materials, events, community service opportunities, student development initiatives, website updates) and producing progress reports as needed.
  • Judgments are recognized as sound, accurate, and knowledgeable and are generally accepted and followed after general review.
  • Efforts have impact on direction, accomplishment of goals, and schedules of projects.
  • Work is expected to be technically thorough, creative, correct, and reliable, and result in the development of technically sound products, judgments, studies, recommendations, and documentation.
  • Recommends constructive ideas to increase the efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity within a specialty area.
  • Develops, defines, and applies new and improved techniques, strategies, and original methods to the solution of important problems in the specialty area.
  • The incumbent works independently without close supervision and performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected.
  • Monitors, coordinates, or directs the work of lower level personnel, clerical assistants and/or student assistants.
  • Coordinates, monitors, and/or supervises the work of clerical personnel and/or student assistants who require assistance and guidance on specific assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in travel industry management, business, education, social sciences or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for advising in academic or student affairs; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of student academic services as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with student academic services.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Desirable Qualifications (if applicable)
  • Master's degree in travel industry management, business, education, social sciences, or related field.
  • Knowledge of UHM programs, procedures and policies, especially as they relate to academic advising and student services.
  • Familiarity with the TIM undergraduate program and curricula.
  • Experience working in a higher education academic setting.
  • Experience/knowledge of advising students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced work environment.
