Job Details

Augustana University invites applications for an Assistant Director for International Student Advising. This position supports the success and integration of international and exchange students by providing comprehensive advising and coordinating programming to foster academic, cultural, and personal development. This full-time position also serves as a Designated School Official (DSO), ensuring compliance with federal immigration regulations and maintaining SEVIS records.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a DSO, ensuring compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations and maintaining accurate SEVIS records.
  • Advise international and exchange students on immigration, academic, cultural, and personal matters.
  • Act as the primary contact for the IREX and UGRAD programs, ensuring program requirements are met.
  • Plan and implement international student orientation to ensure a smooth transition to campus life.
  • Coordinate cultural programs and events, including International Education Week, student excursions, and other globally themed initiatives.
  • Manage programming for the Norwegian January term exchange cohort, including scheduling, advising, and campus collaboration.
  • Collaborate with the International Programs Office and campus partners to advance the institution’s internationalization goals.
  • Each semester, contribute to the instruction of the 1 credit course: “International Student Success: This American Life” by instructing the class, helping coordinate guest speakers, and assisting with grading in the Canvas online learning system.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Strong cultural competency and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Academic program development or event planning experience.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and passport.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field. Foreign language proficiency and experience working with non-native English speakers.
  • Experience designing and leading cultural programs or events for international students
  • Experience with international student recruitment of designing study abroad programs.
  • Knowledge of immigration regulations and processes for international students.

Interacting with students, faculty, and leadership with different backgrounds and points of view and a deep appreciation of and respect for academic values and culture must be a top value of the candidate.
