Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri. Job Summary
The Admission Counselor is a key member of the admission team and will recruit, select and yield the undergraduate classes for Harris-Stowe State University in support of the university’s mission and enrollment goals. To that end, s/he will build positive educational partnerships and working relationships with high school counselors, athletic department coaches and staff, and staff at local community colleges and high schools; reach out to prospective students to assist them to effectively navigate the admissions and enrollment processes and ensure that they meet critical deadlines; and counsel prospective students and their family members about admissions criteria and other critical factors in the educational decision process.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Education and Experience
Candidate must have strong management and interpersonal skills. Must possess computer skills and the ability to communicate effectively; both orally and in writing, with varied constituencies including prospective students, parents, secondary school personnel, alumni, faculty and other staff. Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required; minimum of two (2) years of professional experience, preferably in admissions/recruitment or sales, and Master’s degree preferred.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work independently, yet seek and appreciate the benefits of working on a managed team of admissions professionals using a systemized approach to recruitment and admission

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage a defined geographic territory and meet pre-determined enrollment goals for the defined region
- Disseminate information during community programs, high school visits, college fairs and other recruitment events
- Perform follow-up activities including correspondence, tele-counseling, special events and recruitment travel both on- and off-campus
- Travel approximately 13 weeks during Fall and Spring semesters
- Serve as liaison between prospective students and campus departments
- Have thorough knowledge of admission, academic and financial aid requirements and processes
- Assist with follow-up to complete applicant files
- Make scholarship recommendations; occasional awarding required
- Facilitate placement testing when applicable
- Assist with the creation of presentations and conducts admissions presentation on- and off-campus
- Assist with the advertising, planning and execution of campus events
- Supports the Hornet Hub function by staying informed about events and programs across campus. Admissions Counselors should make a great effort to know about HSSU campus community.
- Participate in training programs to develop professionally and become fully informed about HSSU, recruiting, and admissions strategies. Stay current on national and local higher education trends that related to student recruitment.
- Performs any other duties assigned by the Director of Admissions.

- Evening and weekend work required.
- The position will be located in an open office environment. As conditions merit, this position may be required to work remotely.
- An understanding of and appreciation for the University’s mission and commitment to diversity and inclusion are essential.

- Excellent interpersonal, presentational and written communications skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Attention to details.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of English, grammar, punctuation and correspondence forms.
- Knowledge of Admissions and Harris-Stowe State University.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Office and Excel.
- Experience with Jenzabar CX preferred.
Physical Requirements
- The ability to stand or sit for lengthy time periods.
- The ability to lift recruitment material to be displayed.
