The mission of the International Institute of New England (IINE) is to create opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, career advancement and pathways to citizenship. One of the oldest and largest human services organizations for New Americans in the region, IINE serves more than 9,000 people each year in Boston and Lowell, Massachusetts, and Manchester, New Hampshire. Our programs include case management, youth and family services, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), employment and skills training, and immigration legal services.

Overview

The Admissions Specialist is responsible for the recruitment and enrollment processes for new students, as well as the administration of required language assessments. Additionally, this position supports the role of the Education Advisor by assisting with initial advising appointments and outreach to the ESOL classes to announce and advertise upcoming career pathways workshops.

Responsibilities
  • Interview, enroll and start prospective students.
  • Recruit and enroll students from the website, emails, phone calls and walk-in inquiries.
  • Manage leads letter writing, and participation in on- and off-campus programs, and other duties normally associated with the recruitment and retention of students.
  • Assist in developing recruitment strategies and in monitoring student enrollment, retention, and attrition trends.
  • Conduct recruitment activities including scheduling, enrollment processes, administering language assessments (such as Best Plus 2.0 and TABE Clas E writing), and all other admissions procedures.
  • Maintain student files and lead trackers via multiple databases such as Apricot social solutions, Laces Literacy Pro, and excel.
  • Help organize and teach literacy technology workshops for students wanting to improve their technology skills.
  • Perform student outreach and schedule individual advising appointments.
  • Attend professional development workshops with adult educators across the state.
  • Provide students with guidance to make informed decisions on education, training programs and employment, as well as referrals to other community resources as necessary.
  • Collects student information for SNAP Education, Training enrollment and supports enrollments via the Department of Transitional Assistance.
  • Supervise interns and meet with them on a weekly basis.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to be creative in finding ways to communicate with diverse clientele.
  • Ability to research and find appropriate programs for clients for continuing education, training, etc.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with colleagues.
  • Experience conducting assessments, such as Best, Best Plus and TABE preferred.
  • High level of discretion and professionalism in dealing with confidential client information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other software platforms.
  • Bilingual and bicultural experience a plus.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include day and evening hours.
  • Strong multi-tasking and time management skills.
  • Access to reliable transportation.

Education & Experience
  • BA in Education or related field required.
  • Minimum one year of experience advising or mentoring students previously.

Work Environment Conditions
  • Requires occasional night work.
  • Exposure to bright, overhead office lighting, use of office technology such as laptops, printers, mail machines and other in-office equipment.
  • Frequent interactions with students and colleagues.

Physical Demands
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling materials (boxes, equipment) of 50 pounds or more.
  • Continuous sitting (or standing) at a desk for long periods of time.
  • Frequent bending, reaching overhead, and reaching at or below shoulder level required.
  • Ability to view computer screens for extended periods of time

Covid-19 Policy

IINE does not require applicants for most positions to show proof of Covid-19. Some federal contracts, however, require IINE staff to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination, and some immigration status adjustments, such as a Green Card, require proof of Covid-19 vaccination as well. Consequently, for some positions, IINE staff may be required to show proof of vaccination, and in others, IINE staff will be supporting clients who are required by law to have proof of vaccination in order to adjust their status in the United States.
