Summary/Purpose

The GED Student Advisor is responsible for ensuring the academic performance and progress of all adult education students at Summit. This position would perform an initial conference with each student and continue to monitor their attendance and progress until their GED completion. The GED Student Advisor is also in charge of the student’s application materials.

Student Engagement and Support
  • Arrange and conduct meetings with every enrolled GED or Summit Prep student before the start of their program to discuss placement timelines, potential barriers to completion, and personalized academic goals.
  • Continuously monitor student attendance and academic progress through regular check-ins, progress reports, and data analysis to ensure students are on track to meet their educational objectives.
  • Maintain consistent communication with students via phone, email, and in-person meetings to address any attendance or academic concerns, provide encouragement, and offer guidance on overcoming obstacles.
  • Identify and connect students with relevant community resources, such as tutoring, counseling, transportation, and childcare services, to address barriers that may impede their access to classes and educational success.

Documentation and Compliance
  • Organize, maintain, and audit all student admission files, ensuring all required forms and documentation are accurately completed and securely stored within the student information database (SiD).
  • Ensure compliance with state requirements around the GED/Adult Basic Education, staying current with changes in regulations and implementing necessary updates in policies and procedures.
  • Administer official GED tests, ensuring a secure and standardized testing environment, and providing necessary accommodations for students with disabilities.

Collaboration and Coordination
  • Work closely with the GED Program Manager, coordinators, teachers, and other staff members to develop and implement strategies that promote student success and address any academic or behavioral issues.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination between departments, such as admissions, financial aid, and student services, to ensure a seamless and supportive experience for students.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to program improvement initiatives by providing feedback, sharing best practices, and assisting in the development of new policies and procedures.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Act as an advocate for students, representing their needs and concerns within the organization and working to create an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay informed about best practices in adult education, student advising, and community resource management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the GED Program Manager or other supervisors, which may include special projects, event coordination, and community outreach activities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional school and office environment. This constantly uses standard office equipment such as: computers (with keyboard and mouse), phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to waist height; and to bend, stoop, walk and reach overhead.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). It is not eligible for overtime pay. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evenings and weekends may be required to meet the expectations of the position.

Travel

This position requires limited travel. Less than 5% each year.

Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field from an accredited college/University or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working with individuals from a wide range of ethnic, cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds
  • Experience working in Adult Education is preferred.
