Job Description:

Summary:
STEP Student Coordinators (STUCO) position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Student Success, Transition, & Retention along with additional assistance from the STEP Graduate Coordinator. The STUCOs are responsible for overall support of the STEP residential experience. During the STEP Summer experience, the STUCOs will work in conjunction with the STEP Graduate Coordinator and Senior STEP leadership to create engaging, informative and interactive residential programing. This is a live-on position for the staff onboarding and duration of the 2025 STEP summer experience. All STEP Coordinators must be available for all training sessions, which begin on Monday, June 23, 2025, Attend and be on time for all training, workshops, staff meetings, and events.

Responsibilities:
1.) Attendance
  • Attend weekly meetings with STEP Graduate Coordinator.
  • Attending weekly one-on-one meetings with supervisor, Assistant Director for Student Success, Transition, and Retention.
  • Staff will participate in three assessments related to the STEP Experience.

2.) Residential Programing
  • Create 2-3 weekly afterhours programing opportunities that encourage community building and engagement.
  • Create weekend events for students to explore the DMV area safely and effectively.
  • Create a safe, neutral and inclusive residential environment for all students

3.) Supervision
  • Encourage and maintain a community atmosphere where the rights and responsibilities of staff, STEP students, and guests are held in high regard.
  • Participate in STEP community building and some workshop/educational activities and encourage the participation and involvement of all summer STEP students.

4.) Facilities Maintenance
  • Complete the room check process to ensure that a room is clean and ready for occupancy, as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain the condition of UCGS facilities, furniture and equipment, and report problems as they arise.
  • Create community building opportunities for STEP cohort within the residence hall.
  • Understand, enforce, and adhere to all relevant policies/procedures as set forth by University Conference & Guest Services, the Student Code of Conduct, CDI, and American University.
  • Assist with clean up and organization of STEP supplies and resources within the residential building.


Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work:
  • Part-Time.
  • 20-25 hours a week (for 7 weeks)
  • Dates of Employment: 06/23/2025 - 08/11/2025.
  • Applicants must be prepared to work long hours during the week and work weekends during onboarding sessions and the first week of the summer program.


Compensation:
  • $17.50 per hour.
  • Housing.
  • Meals: onboarding and program only.
  • Transportation: Metro pass provided via metro for STEP outings.


Required Education and Experience:
  • Must be enrolled at AU and have good academic standing with a Cumulative GPA of a 2.8 or higher.
  • Be to show capability of administrative, organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills. Previous participation or involvement in STEP program is not required.
  • Possess a proactive and creative mindset yet also able to work well in a team atmosphere.
  • Skills in planning, implementing, budgeting, task management, conflict resolution, and goal setting.
  • Hiring is contingent on the successful completion of a background check and judicial academic records.
  • Must live in residence halls during summer months.
  • Live-in staff members are expected to be available for all scheduled assignments and projects, and are expected to be accessible in person, by phone, or by e-mail to answer questions, respond to emergency situations, and to perform other administrative tasks and projects as needed.
  • Full attendance at mandatory summer onboarding, training sessions, and staff meetings.
